Dog Owner Gets 15-Years-to-Life in 2001 Fatal Mauling
Dog Owner Gets 15-Years-to-Life in 2001 Fatal Mauling

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) A San Francisco Superior Court judge today sentenced Marjorie Knoller to 15 years to life in prison for the 2001 fatal dog mauling of her apartment neighbor Diane Whipple.

On Jan. 26, 2001, two Presa Canario guard dogs owned by Knoller and her husband Robert Noel attacked and killed Whipple, a 33-year-old lacrosse coach, in the hallway of their Pacific Heights apartment building.

The attack occurred when Knoller was returning to her apartment after taking one of the dogs, Bane, for a walk on the roof of the building. After the mauling began, the second dog, Hera, joined Bane in the attack.

Trial evidence showed that Whipple suffered 77 wounds from the 150- and 130-pound dogs and lost one-third of her blood.

Knoller, now 53, served three years of a four-year prison sentence after the 2002 second-degree murder conviction was overturned by the original trial Judge James Warren for a lesser, involuntary manslaughter conviction. But the state Supreme Court in 2007 ruled Warren used the wrong standard.

Superior Court Judge Charlotte Woolard on Aug. 22 denied a motion by Knoller's attorney for a new trial and ordered that her 2002 jury conviction for second-degree murder be reinstated.

2. I'm glad
These two losers, her and her kooky husband, need to be put away permanently. They showed absolutely no remorse during the trial.

4. Thanks for posting this update
I was just thinking about this poor woman the other day. If I recall correctly, the neighbors were incredibly callous about the attack and even tried blaming the victim. Tragic story.

5. Good
Their cavalier attitude - that the victim somehow brought the mauling on herself - was enough for me - and I'm opposed to the death penalty - to begin reconsidering capital punishment.

Good. That's a just sentence. Too bad the husband didn't get the same sentence.

7. The ONLY thing that saved his sorry ass from the same fate was that
he wasn't physically present during the attack. But he made those dogs into the killers they were, same as his wife.

Actions have consequences. I hate people who train dogs to be mean with a purple passion.

6. Good. I have neighbors around the corner that are not attending to their dogs.
We all try to stay clear of that corner and it's just an accident waiting to happen. A really, really bad one.
