"Only ONE GOP Member Of Banking Committee Can Be Counted On To Vote For Bailout
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 12:24 PM by kpete
Or, in other words, Pelosi isn't going to pass a bailout unless more than half of the Republican caucus votes for it. And Harry Reid sent a similar message:

In the Senate, Republicans have also lined up to oppose their president’s bill, which led Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to worry that he may not have enough Republican votes to pass the package.

“We need Republican votes to help us,” he said. “This is a Republican package and we need Republican votes.”

To get an idea of the scope of the problem, only one (anonymous) GOP member of the Senate Banking Committee is reported to support the bailout.

Reid said that his Democratic colleagues told him that as of Tuesday only one Republican on the Banking Committee could be counted on to vote for the bailout.

3. I agree--Dems shouldn't be stuck with this. It's the GOPers' fault to begin with.

5. Ok.....what is going on????
This is Bush's deal. It's his henchmen who are begging at the trough.

Why are the Republicans against this and the Dems for it???

My head is spinning.

I am so completely boggled by this. I thought it would be the Dems holding out
and the Republicans screaming at the Dems for failing to save the economy.

Are the Reps forcing the Dems to fight for this bailout--to get them on
record as being 'for' it--and then when it fails the Reps will be able
to say, "We didn't want to do this! We told you so!"

Is that the deal?

they don't want the masses mad at them for taking their money. this is all happening right before the elections. If it was to occur AFTER the election, they would probably vote for it.

13. Then you have to wonder....
Why are the Democrats so willing to vote for this bailout?

They'll get the same flack from their constituents, too.

Something is off...really, really off.

9. It's a set up to make it look like the Dems are to blame for the economic crisis.

12. Yes and for Republicans to distance themselves from the unpopular administration
They have needed some major issue that they can point to and say this is where they are different from Bush.
And the way this has been presented is allowing them to do so, conveniently right before the November elections.

10. Well, since Chimpy has a 19% approval rating, maybe he's agreed to be
the GOP sacrificial lame duck to snooker the Dems into the bailout, and then the rest of the GOP can distance themselves from Bush AND from the low-approval Dem Congress in one fell swoop and start claiming that they're fiscally responsible. But, McLoser has indicated he supports at least the stripped-down version of the bailout, so it probably won't work.

11. While * and friends will get rich and ride off into the sunset on this...
the repukes know that they will have to run for reelection and they better not use the phrase "fiscally responsible" in their campaign after passing this turd. In the end, the repukes will demand some sort of specific oversight, the bill will get passed, and the oversight will just never be done.
