"Gun-totin', book-banning cheerleader Palin is a gimmicky Trojan horse"
Two things are true: Sarah Palin is the Trojan horse. And Sen. John
McCain is hidden by her popularity, becoming less than a player in his
own campaign.

The reason that the Alaska governor is so popular is simple: Republicans don't know who McCain is -- today. If political positions were plastic surgery, he'd be a big hit in Beverly Hills. He has changed his look -- and outlook -- so many times that right now, it's hard for his campaign to keep up.

His campaign was stalled, so he found a gun-totin', book-banning cheerleader to lead the way....

And with the news that the surge he enjoyed after first announcing Palin -- before actually getting to know her through revelations, prevarications, investigations and consternations -- McCain is in trouble.

If John McCain had stayed true to who he was when he ran against President George W. Bush, he'd actually be in better shape now. But once the shape-shifting began, it was hard to quit.

Now he better find his next gimmick.

Because he's going to need a bigger horse.
