BC-USA-POLITICS/DEBATE-HOSTS (URGENT)@ University says plans US debate Friday as scheduled@ WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The University of Mississippi said Wednesday it expected the first U.S. presidential debate to take place on Friday as scheduled, despite John McCain's decision to suspend campaigning and seek a postponement. "We are ready to host the debate and we expect the debate to occur as planned," the university said in a statement, adding it had been notified by the Commission on Presidential Debates that the meeting between Republican McCain and Democrat Barack Obama would proceed as scheduled. McCain, in a statement to reporters, said he would suspend his campaign Thursday to return to Washington to help work on legislation on a $700 billion financial bailout plan to resolve the worst U.S. financial crisis since the Great Depression.
