Did anyone see his statement today?

He **really** looks very ill. It was like watching a shooting victim make a statement at the hospital to the local teevee reporter.

The man looks seriously ill to me.

40. Your parents don't run for President...
It's become very hard, very physical to run for President, nowadays. You need to be in tip top shape, eat right, sleep enough, exercise just the right amount and handle the stress.

Things which become harder when you're 72, even with military background.

I think that McCain is starting to fatigue and if the GOP wants to replace him, it's now.

Romney would probably take over.

16. That's the side where he had the BIG surgery
for his facial melanoma.

My guess is that some nerves were cut during the surgery. Hence, the droop, which probably gets worse when he gets tired.

Naomi Wolf:
"Reputable dermatologists are discussing the fact that in simply actuarial terms, John McCain has a virulent and life-threatening form of skin cancer. It is the elephant in the room, but we must discuss the health of the candidates: doctors put survival rates for someone his age at two to four years."

29. Okydokey...a word about the aftermath of lymph node removal.
I have had lymph node removal performed twice to check for cancer. From one day to the next, that area of my body can look drastically different. Sagging from excess fluid can be seen under my arms, around my lower neck, where my breasts used to be.

When I am too active, or don't get enough rest, the swelling is more pronounced.

If McCain is retaining fluid where the lymph nodes had been, the excess weight would cause the sagging that is so obvious in his left cheek and eye area today.

I am not saying this is what is definitely going on with McCain, just throwing it out there as a possibility.

This explains it better than I can:

"The lymphatic system has three primary functions. First of all, it returns excess interstitial fluid to the blood. Of the fluid that leaves the capillary, about 90 percent is returned. The 10 percent that does not return becomes part of the interstitial fluid that surrounds the tissue cells. Small protein molecules may "leak" through the capillary wall and increase the osmotic pressure of the interstitial fluid. This further inhibits the return of fluid into the capillaries, and fluid tends to accumulate in the tissue spaces. If this continues, blood volume and blood pressure decrease significantly and the volume of tissue fluid increases, which results in edema (swelling). Lymph capillaries pick up the excess interstitial fluid and proteins and return them to the venous blood. After the fluid enters the lymph capillaries, it is called lymph."

And the swelling being more pronounced in response to activity or lack of rest is especially revealing.

I believe I've read that McCain has a very limited campaign schedule, and probably even that is too much for him at this point.

32. This is EXACTLY what fellow POW Phillip Butler was talking about. . .
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 08:46 PM by DinahMoeHum
why he was not going to vote for McCain. Among other things:

(snip)
Most of us who survived that experience are now in our late 60's and 70's. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John's age (73) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for 4 or more years.
(snip)

http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,164859_2,00.html

BTW, this is why McCain and other POWs collect what is known as "presumptive disability" pay from the VA. Someone like McCain could look like the picture of good health when you first see him. Then again, he could drop dead or become disabled from a heart attack or stroke the next day.

I should know - that happened to my father, a former WW II POW (start of Battle of the Bulge December 1944). In late January 2005, I last spoke with him. During the Christmas holidays a few weeks back, I could see he was getting on in age (he was 81). However, he sounded good and seemed to be in good spirits. The next morning, my mother called to tell me he died in his sleep.

60. I would agree with this - the campaigns are grueling
Earlier this year, when there was a discussion of how exhausted Clinton and Obama looked, John Kerry spoke of how running for President was phsyically the hardest thing he had ever done - and Kerry is unusually fit and atheletic.

McCain is about 8 years older and has had more health problems. Even Obama much younger than either has looked tired at points - and he, like Kerry, is very fit.

His poll numbers are sinking as fast as the Dow Jones Index

The Wasilla Wonderwoman get flummoxed by the likes of Katie Couric on national television.

His campeign manager got caught in a big lie regarding payments for lobbying for Freddy Mack.

Obama's coming on strong.

Right now Gramps is probably about ready to go on a long retreat to one of his many houses and sit down for a nice long bridge tournament with Bob Dole.
