Pelosi praises Bush speech, tells market "rest assured Congress will act to buy up the toxic debt"
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday night she was “pleased” with President Bush’s primetime speech, praising the president for his sober analysis of the financial crisis.

“In his speech tonight, the President presented a long overdue assessment of the state of the economy and the urgent need for legislation to respond to the financial crisis,” Pelosi said in a statement.

“I was pleased that the President acknowledged the improvements Congress has made to his original proposal, which was unacceptable.”

“In Congress, we are committed to passing bipartisan legislation that will stabilize the markets, protect taxpayers, establish tough oversight, and curb excessive CEO compensation. And we will pass it soon.”

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that financial markets can rest assured that Congress will act on the White House plan to buy up to $700 billion in toxic debt. Pelosi said the exact timing of the House vote would depend on the outcome of closed-door meetings currently underway on Capitol Hill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reassured financial markets that a rescue plan would come to the House floor soon. "Please be assured that we will have a package that will speak to the issue in a very substantial way to send a message to the markets of our seriousness," Pelosi said at a press conference.

2. Well, that's reassuring.
I feel so much better now. :sarcasm:

Anytime I see the word "bipartisan" come up, I know it's time for me to bend over. If it's a Republican using the word, it means they got exactly what they want. If it's a Dem, it's invariably used as an excuse to stick it to the poor and middle class.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Fuck Pelosi.

40. Well, there's always the upcoming election.
Aside from that, I don't know how to go about having the Speaker replaced. I'm sure there's a way to do it but it would probably require our elected Reps to do something. Given their record of craven spinelessness and complicity over the years, I rather doubt we can can get anything going on that front. However, if you have ANY suggestions on how to do this, I'm all ears. Not only does Pelosi need to be gone, she should have never been put in in the first place.

22. I want to say thank you Nancy.
You've just saved me the trouble of ever voting again. Or working, or donating.

Now, before anyone gets too bent out of shape, I turned my absentee ballot in on Monday, for this election, and I voted Obama. I've voted in every election since I became eligible in 1972, and every vote has been for a Democrat.

5. So Pelosi is using "rescue" now as well?
I think the Poster who said she was a "colossal disappointment" hit it on the head. She has done nothing to further the progressive agenda, nothing to protect the common citizen, and nothing to restore faith in the Democratic party. Is there a way to remove her as Speaker during this election cycle? I doubt it will happen, but it would be nice to have someone who really represented the party and the common citizen. She is not up to the job.

But how come a nobody like me knew what George would do to us? How come it was THAT EASY to see for me? And all those well-paid people just thought he was great to have a beer with.

I can see where she wants to try to make Bush think he deserves a compliment. But, she is making a PROMISE? We must wait to hear what the vote is about and the count to pillory her, but this does not look or sound good for the little people. She is NOT a little person. So, if it's the worst - this cab be used as a prime example of how certain Democrats are screwing us side-by-side with the Republicans. I hope for the best.

19. The OP title is somewhat misleading.
Saying that his original proposal was unacceptable is hardly praise.

Once again, Pelosi has done the right thing and will be roundly condemned by DU for doing it.

37. Jackasses, the whole lot of 'em...
...they all let this happen. Now it's up to us US Taxpayers to bail out the crooks who perpetrated fraud on the world financial system.

Gawd how I wish just one person in that den of vipers would tell it like it really is: that what we are paying for is outright FRAUD perpetrated by our very own band of financial geniuses, and that when the world's financiers figured out they'd been had, there was Hell to pay.

We are being extorted by the same gang of conscienceless thugs who did the dirty deed in the first place. It is revolting and it is worthy of revolt.

And no I'm not kidding. Not even a little bit.

Utterly revolting and worth of revolt.
