6. homeless activists put it up to dare the city to take it down
and named it after mayor greg nickels to goad him into it.

the city has been clearing out "illegal encampments" that spring up in every conceivable nook & cranny of unused open space in the city.

here's a picture:

7. Sounds to me like it was a planned protest by homeless
advocates. Lots of the people there are advocates, not actual homeless people. Some are homeless people from other tent cities in the area. Some apparently want to be arrested, to bring attention to the homeless.

9. It was a planned action, by a lot of groups..
but it is also a home to over 100 people already... It's a real community and is hurting nothing and no one. Our Mayor is a fat bastard.

10. Thanks for the additional details.
And yes, our Mayor IS a fat bastard.

I'd like to know where homeless people are supposed to go, if they can't stay in their tent cities. I think Nickles is like a lot of politicians; sweep the uglier side of the city off the streets, and pretend it doesn't exist. Or more to the point, sweep the homeless off the streets, and pretend THEY don't exist.

8. Holy shit!! Deja Vu ... we went through this in 2000-01 in Portland. The city finally gave in.
and designated a plot of public land for Dignity Village to permanently settle and build a
"green urban village" with wind/solar power and cob/haybail cottages. It's still running
as a 100% self-governed 501c3 corporation under ORegon law.
