Poll question: The 2008 Holiday Season
Based on what you know this year, how would you predict your holiday spending will be?

1. I don't buy gifts.
I prefer a non-materialistic Xmas.

3. Good for you! Me, too!
I remember being a kid and getting some modest presents but now it has degenerated into this buying orgy that is so devoid of anything representing the spirit of the holidays that I feel sorry for kids today.

5. Many years ago I discovered the real joy of the season didn't involve hours at the mall
looking for gifts, spending lots of money, and fighting the crowds.

I decorate, bake cookies and enjoy the neighborhood light displays and really have a good, stress-free time.
I also make extra donations to charity. So many in need, so little money to help, but I do what I can.

6. Very, very true. I have come to dread Christmas and never did before
I don't like having to exchange gifts in rote fashion. I'd rather surprise someone on the spur of the moment.

Your idea of baking is awesome! There's nothing like homemade cookies. Lord knows most people don't need yet another gift card to Target. And good on you for donating money to the needy. They are the ones who appreciate every little thing.

4. Other:
My wife and I are donating to a charity of one's choosing. This year we've selected Kiva "Loans that Save Lives" (www.kiva.org) and Remote Area Medical "Providing free medical care to people in remote areas around the world" (www.ramusa.org/).

We've always made family tradition by hand-crafting gifts around the holidays, and this year will be no exception. Not only does the purchase of the materials stimulate the local economy, it gives my wife and I quality time with our daughter in creating these gifts for our friends and family.

This year we very well may hand-craft 90% of all our gifts.

7. We stepped off the gift merry-go-round.
We will enjoy the season without rushing around to buy more stuff that nobody needs. We will treat ourselves to a Christmas concert and a nice lobster meal for Christmas eve.*

*lobster pending us not going bankrupt before December :)
