We shouldn't be bending over and giving republicans 'substantial tax cuts' for their bailout votes
Senate leaders scheduled a vote for Wednesday night on a version of the bill that adds substantial tax cuts meant to appeal to Republicans when it reaches the House.

The goal is to net at least 12 more House votes than the rescue proposal received Monday, when lawmakers rocked the political and financial worlds by rejecting it.

If republicans feel that there is such a dire emergency in the credit market they should step up and vote for legislation addressing that emergency. But there isn't ANY reputable economist who has recommended putting even more unaccountable money into the pockets of lenders in the hope that it'll trickle down in the form of renewed loans to the working-class.

It's a goddamn shame that there's not enough backbone and fight in our party to stand up against this open blackmail. Anyone who approves of this little deal can forget arguing against 'tax cuts for the wealthy.' Opposing them used to be a Democratic principle. Now it's an opportunistic bargaining chip. No surprise here. These people don't give a damn about 'rescuing' average Americans. They just want to legislate an artificial, ephemeral stall. If they believed in the blather they've been mouthing to get elected, they would never cater to these republican crooks.

Where is the partisan Democratic legislation in response? Bring it on. This appeasement is no protection of the working class. Those Democratic provisions that would address the root causes of the debt were stripped from the final bill to get republican votes. Now they're giving them even more. Brilliant.

1. Bush will never sign a "tax hike"
which is exactly what the plan to charge investors would be called. We should have passed what we had and waited until we had a Dem President.

2. It's Bush who's warning about a 'depression'
I expect for our legislators to demand he sign whatever they pass, after all of his bleating.

I wonder if we could get a majority with a more Democratic-oriented bill, not paying any mind to what Bush wants. He's at 30% approval for shitsakes!

4. It is disgusting
I do think the House Dems should just pass a really good Dem bill, to see what the public reaction would be. But this Senate one is a real stinker, I hate these tax cuts. I can't even understand how anybody would think these rich fucks need more tax cuts. I guess they think it'll be easier to get the 12 Republicans than to get anymore Dems.

3. It's inexcusable.
Dems are in the driver's seat to get something realistic done, and instead, they are actually driving the cost of this bailout UP.

5. It's maddening
No one can convince me that the pack of thieves and the gamblers waiting for the taxpayers to re-game their pyramid scheme are going to do a damn thing to loosen credit for working class Americans. Now we're set to give them more money in their pockets. Amazing.

7. I emailed my Oregon senators and will follow up with a phone call
to their offices tomorrow morning. I thought the first bill was bad; now with tax cuts......do they want some blood from me while they're at it?
