2. I like Maher on the political stuff, but don't agree with his atheism
He doesn't seem to understand that well adjusted folks are able to use logic on "worldly" things, and symbolism when interpreting the Word of God.

God exists. Science exists. They need not be mutually exclusive.

3. He is an Agnostic , not an Atheist
and there is no need for you to agree with him

6. Sorry - I don't agree
Science exists -

God is a fairy tale you tell yourself so you're not afraid of the dark. A spiritual blanky if you will.

9. Agreed. Either rely on what scientific epistemology tells us, or don't. You can't have it both ways.
Think of it this way.

Is there a pink vampire centaur out there in the universe that controls all of our actions here on earth? Possibly. We can't disprove that unless we scour all dimensions of our universe.

But if there is no EVIDENCE SUPPORTING such, that question itself becomes irrelevant, as we base our convictions of existence or non-existence, and indeed, the very scaffolding of our logic, on evidence. If evidence is thus rendered irrelevant in this manner, you could, using the same "logic," argue that the red ball I see, feel, and touch infront of me on my table is in fact not there (I mean, you know on FAITH it isn't there!). The evidence is irrelevant, as you say.

Compounded upon that, you could argue that any conclusions we draw from ANYTHING (ie, when I push this ball it moves) are untenable. You have thus undermined logic itself. What relevance does anything have to our existence at all? Anything and Nothing exists. The presupposition is an inability to posit any conclusion of any kind, thus indicating an ability to make any sort of progress of any kind where one builds off of patterned conclusions.

14. May your soul eternally rot in the blood soaked dungeons of our sanguine centaur lord.
Amen.

13. I'm an atheist but I agree with elkston about the symbolic worth of religion.
The thing is, if you watched the interview, that's not what Maher is talking about. He's dealing with the people who take these things literally. Yes, all world religions contain rich, beautiful and potentially useful systems of metaphor and allegory. It's the people who take it all at face value who are the problem though.

7. Hmm, Does God Exist - Have Seen No Proof Of That Proposition
Maybe Bill M. has the same perspective.

My opinion, and it is only my opinion, some people have a need for God, some people don't.

In my family, myself and one other brother have no need. The remaining brother is quite religious.

My take, and it is only my take, it is in the genes.
