Lesson learned: Some people can not be reached. Reach out to the ones who can listen.
After a visit with my landlord last night, I realized that there are people to whom NOTHING will make a difference. They will not look at an issue/person except through a filter that reinforces their beliefs.

My landlord is a good, caring man. He's worked hard, farmed for most of his life, had three jobs for several years, would go out of his way to help you (as he has done for me.)

But he believes, and told me, that unless we watch FOX we're not getting the real, truthful story.

We were having a pleasant discussion (as far as that is possible between two people so diametrically opposed) and he honestly believes the stories he hears, and also believes he's doing the right thing by supporting McCain. (He said he wished it would have been Romney as nom, though.)

So... I'm not going to change his mind. When I would counter - gently - with facts, or our side of the story, he wasn't buying it.

As much as I'd like to wish it were so, we can't make people see the light.

So all I can do is reach out to those who will listen, give them the information they desire, do what I can to help them register and get to the polls.

I'm not going to waste any more time 'worrying' about or railing against those people whose minds are made up.

And in a way he and I are simpatico -- we're not changing our stance regardless of what somebody else tries to tell us.

1. Absolutely right! Not only that, but engaging these people energizes them to vote.
And not in a good way. That's why canvasser's walk lists don't include everyone.

3. That's one of the first lessons you learn at Camp Wellstone.
Don't waste your time with the hardcores.
