Poll question: Bad Vice Presidents (can't use Cheney)
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:21 PM by norepubsin08
Name the worst Vice President that we have had. Can't use Cheney, because I am afraid he would win by a mile.

7. Forgot John Tyler. Slaveowner went on to serve in the Confederate Congress.
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:10 PM by faygokid
I would replace Ford with Tyler.

One of "His Accidency"'s records will never be broken: Fathered 22 children with two wives, as I recall.

No wonder he's wearing that shit-eatin' grin.

15. Cool. Actually, already voted Johnson, per dinner I had with Cornel West a couple years ago.
Spent the whole evening with him, in Detroit. Great guy; very down to earth, with a wonderful sense of humor. I asked him if he agreed that W. was the worst president ever. He was no fan, but held special animosity for Andrew Johnson, who was a horrid racist. He cited chapter and verse about the history of the Andrew Johnson Administration, and I mean not just some broad brush, but specific acts, laws, etc., and quoted Johnson statements. Wow. Brilliant. A very special evening. We had a hell of a time finding a bar open in downtown Detroit with food after 10 near Wayne State University, but we persevered. What a night! He convinced me, so I voted Andrew Johnson. But thanks for adding Tyler, too. (Hey, there's a slogan - Something something, and Tyler, too. . . )

21. And as I noted about Tyler, Johnson really didn't have much time as Veep
He was in that office for what, five or six weeks?

Although he gets some props for giving a drunken rant of a speech when sworn in.

But of course,, an awful, awful president.

14. But Tyler was only Veep for a month
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:34 PM by NoPasaran
Of course, he was a lousy President. Pity the Whigs, who chose Tyler, who didn't support any of their platform, and spent his term blocking them at every turn.

And yeah, then he turned traitor. Fuck Tyler, just not for his brief Vice Presidency.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Aaron Burr. Or John C. Calhoun.

11. Not the worst but Wilson's VP, Thomas Marshall deserves to be an honorable mention
All he's known for today is his famous, "All this country needs is a good five cent cigar." When in the Fall of 1919 Wilson was felled by a very serious stroke and effectively didn't govern for several months, many dems wanted Marshall to declare Wilson incapacitated and take over in a time when there were serious problems being ignored such as high inflation, unemployment, strikes and, of course, the Peace Treaty following WWII. Marshall declined to do so, in part, because he would have to give up the fees he received for lectures around the country.

17. John Breckenridge
From Kentucky, Veep 1856-1860. Went on to be Confederate Secretary of War. A US veep who became a secessionist rather than a former secessionist trying to go on to become US Veep.

25. I always thought Aaron Burr.
Not in a political sense, but he did kill our first Secretary of the Treasury.

Maybe we should bring him back for our Secretary of the Treasury...
