McCain forced to defend North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—For the third weekend in a row, Barack Obama campaigned in North Carolina as part of the most vigorous Democratic effort since at least 1992 to win this reliably Republican state.

At a surprise stop Saturday night at a North Carolina Democratic Party dinner and again a rally here Sunday in the state’s conservative western edge, Obama sounded a confident note:

“Despite the pundits, despite the prognosticators, despite the cynicism,” Obama said at the dinner, “we are right here in the hunt in North Carolina. We can win at the top of the ballot in North Carolina. And we win at the bottom of the ballot in North Carolina. We can win in the eastern part of the state and in the western part. We can elect a new Democratic governor here in North Carolina and we can elect a new U.S. senator here in North Carolina.”

To the dismay of North Carolina Republicans, Obama may not be overstating matters.

2. Go us!
I have a young friend (in his 20's) who's going to Charlotte to work with the Obama campaign fulltime this last month.

Hugh McColl CEO of Bank of America (in Charlotte NC) endorsed Obama today.

Elizabeth Dole is down 8 points--at least--to her Dem challenger Kay Hagan.

5. Dole's in big trouble for her Senate race
It seems that wily Tar Heel Staters are becoming weary of Republican nonsense, and many of them are reconsidering their reflexive distaste for the Democrats. Obama's doing a smart thing by making campaign stops in North Carolina. Even if McCain manages to win there, he's going to have to spend some money and time there that he would much rather be spending in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida.

11. Go NC Dems!...
Spent a week in your wonderful state in April, and nothing would make me happier than to spend future tourist dollars in a blue state!

12. McCain is in a Catch-22
He hasn't had a speech in the state since the primary and he hasn't set foot in the state since a meeting in June.

If he shows up to campaign, he admits things are not good in North Carolina. If he only sends Palin, he looks weak. If there's not any campaigning, he looks like he's given up.

He's in a major bind in North Carolina and he may not be able to pull it out after the results of the PPP poll went public.
