Thank god she shares none of his neocon viewpoints.

3. The whole family is pretty wack ... Jon Voight used to be a big Indian activist ...
but I think even they got tried of his act; I sort of think he's right-wing views are the result of feeling spurred.

I remember him making some bizarre statements that caused a lot of embarrassment to NA community.

28. It's only a rumor so far, but she may be in a movie based on an Ayn Rand book.
If it gets made, it will be because she got involved.

He had one of the front rows searts at the Republican National Convention. He also writes whacked out right wing pieces for the Washington Times.

7. I had a sudden return of memory over the weekend.
In February or March of 1972, as a small town Iowa high school senior, I traveled with some friends to the University of Northern Iowa to see Senator George McGovern speak. McGovern, of course, was running for the Democratic nomination, and would secure it within a few months.

I hadn't thought of that in years, but that memory, and another, came crashing back this weekend, when I saw a blurb on TV about John Voight being a Republican.

The other memory? In the fall of 1972 I was a freshman at UNI. One afternoon I went to the same hall where McGovern had spoken to see an actor speak on behalf of his candidacy. His name? John Voight. I even got to shake his hand. Dead fish have firmer grips. I wonder what happened to change him.

in that role...I'm a former college film major and "Coming Home" is probably my favorite of all time.

Can I ask where you got this information?...Did you read it in an interview somewhere?...I'm interested because I remember how shocked I was recently when he turned up on the Glen Beck show.....I was like "Whaaaat??!

although I could be wrong.

He did win the Oscar for Best Actor in '79 for his role as a paralyzed anti-war Vietnam Vet in "Coming Home"..He was truly great, as was the movie as a whole.

I try to remember him that way.:eyes:

13. He went to my high school.
A constipated McCarthy era, Roman Catholic, hard right, NY, hard -headed, Cardinal Spellman world view predominated there in the 50's. Despite his dalliance with the left in the late 60's/early 70s ( which, lets face it, was good for Midnight Cowboy's career) he drank and metabolized the 50's kool-aidthat was forced on him by RC eduacation, not really understanding anything that happened in the real world.

Jon's frozen in time.

Here's wiki:

>>>>In the 1970s during the Nixon administration, Voight actively protested against the Vietnam War. However, he wrote that he regrets his youthful anti-war activism in a July 28, 2008 op-ed piece in the Washington Times, calling it the result of "Marxist propaganda."

Voight appeared on Fox & Friends to endorse former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the 2008 Republican Party nomination. He attended a Giuliani campaign event and said New York City was transformed into a much safer, cleaner and more livable city. He said "God sent an angel, his name was Rudy Giuliani."<4> In another interview in Miami with AventuraUSA.com, Voight said he first met Giuliani "years ago" at a movie premiere in New York City and the main reason for his support was Giuliani's public poise in the wake of the September 11 attacks.<5> In the interview, Voight revealed he and then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton "are friends.">>>>

39. It doesn't matter what they know or don't know.
Their role is society is to entertain. Entertainment is a business.

If they are at a dinner party, they can talk about whatever they want. I couldn't care less. On the "red carpet" they can also talk about whatever they want, but I won't be listening.

We put microphones in front of their faces (unlike me, and I'll presume you) because of their JOB - not because they are learned sages. They have the job they have largely because of their appearance.

The obsession with the lives of these people is out of control and Americans are treating them like an oligarchy; the elite who dictate what we see, what we wear, what we eat, how we think.

No matter how much I may agree with them, this is not their role.

Jon Voigt has a degree in art. His daughter holds a diploma from Beverly Hills High School. These are not the people Americans should be turning to for advice on much of anything.

First of all, I don't see Americans, en masse, turning to Voigt, Jolie or any other celebrity for their political opinions.

Having said that, I must say that you seem particularly disdainful of these people. Although I agree that their opinions should not be afforded particular importance because of who they are, I don't think they should be dismissed for that reason either.

Your emphasis on "roles" seems odd to me. These people are humans and citizens, not trained monkeys. Should anyone be so rigidly confined to a "role" that every opinon expressed outside of it is automatically dismissed?...I think not. As Paul Newman said, "I didn't give up my rights as a citizen when I got my SAG card".

As for John and Angela's eduation, great, but...So what? Jody Foster and Paul Newman went to Yale. And Bill Gates is a college dropout.

43. The disdain is a product of the obsession, whatthehell.
Look at the OP again.

We're reduced to discussing their lives and their personalities, not their ideas.

They're not humans; they are celebrities. Same species, but altogether different animal.

Their dysfunctional lives and self-absorbed personalities are a distraction from ideas of true importance. The obsession with celebrities further muddles the distinction between news and entertainment.

We would be better off if more people simply enjoyed their art and then ignored them.

I do agree that too much is made of celebrities generally...but calling them "not human" is, in my opinion, despicable and maybe even a little daft.

You say the "disdain" comes from the obsession but it is not the celebrities who are "obsessing" -- Why blame them? -- It's a segment of the public and frankly, I do NOT think they are represented on this board; A couple of comments is hardly reason to think otherwise.

Ironically, the person "obsessed" with celebrities, even if negatively, appears to be you!

As a former college film major, I respect some as talents and have a mild interest in them as artists...That's it!

For my part, this conversation is over.
