Chiquita inks plea deal on terror group charges

Chiquita Brands International Inc. will plead guilty to doing business with terrorist organizations in Colombia, where it formerly grew bananas, and pay $25 million to settle the charges.

Federal prosecutors, in charges filed as part of the plea arrangement, said that high-ranking corporate officials approved payments to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Chiquita said in a news release that the payments were made by a former subsidiary because of threats to the safety of its employees. The company said it has been cooperating with the federal investigation.



Right or wrong, it sounds like protection money to me. Unfortunately, in some places, you just have to do that.
