McCain is mentally unstable. Calling him 'erratic' is a gross understatement. He's unhinged.

"My fellow prisoners . . ." That's just too far out there to ignore.

1. Not only that...
...he didn't even acknowledge it. I can see Obama -- or any other halfway decent speaker -- making a joke out of it. Or being human about it: "What the heck did I just say? Whaa?" But not Grumpy McThatOne.

6. Palin and whoever the young blonde behind him was didn't bat an eyelash either
Perhaps hearing it in context I could understand what he meant to say. But I'm really not interested in listening to McSame anymore. As far as I'm concerned he was doing the usual Repub projecting of the problems they've created for others onto themselves.

We are all prisoners of failed GOP policies.

15. Scientologists
That's what his circle is reminding me of.
I see them here in Hollywood all the time, they go to the Ron L Hubbard Kool-Aid stand then escape to mingle with the general population for a few minutes to get coffee or food and they all walk around with that Stepford stare, flat, emotionless, robotic obedient.

13. The scary thing is, I don't think he did mean it to be a joke.
I think he just slipped and said it, and didn't even realize it. The uncomfortable hush over the crowd spoke volumes, though. Freudian? Or yet another example of dementia setting in? I'd go with the latter here.

12. I'm going to lay down one more view of McCain's mental state here and back off . . .
HuffPo: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/pam-atherton/debate-takeaway-im-worrie_b_133078.html

Debate Takeaway: I'm Worried About McCain's Durability

{snip}

Speaking in the hypothetical: If McCain were president, it's not the question of what happens if, God forbid, something should happen to him and he passes on. (We all know that means VP Palin would move up the corporate ladder). No, my question is what happens if he DOESN'T make that one-way trip. What happens if his mental capacities start to wane and he's still in office? What happens then?

The Alzheimers Association says as many as 5 million Americans are living with the disease and that it's the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. We've already had one president who had Alzheimers, Reagan, who many believe was afflicted with the disease while in office. Is it so unreasonable to consider the possibility that it might happen to another?

If McCain were to start to slip mentally, would we acknowledge that he had problems, or would that telegraph weakness to other nations? What if the mental problems were erratic? Would we brush "episodes" aside as normal forgetfulness and stress from the office? Could he "accidentally" say or do something that would set our country on a course for disaster? Who would take over? Who would be in the decision-making chair? Would we even know?

What if McCain were to suffer a stroke? It happened to President Woodrow Wilson, and he was only 62 (if I do my math correctly). Why couldn't it happen to McCain? Wilson's wife is considered to have been the "secret president" during the period of time that he was incapacitated. Would that mean that Cindy McCain would be making decisions for our country in domestic and foreign affairs? Would we even know?

You can perhaps see my concern. We don't even like to talk about mental issues, erratic behavior and mood disorders, much less admit to them. How would we handle a president who was showing signs of these conditions?

...sure it wasn't part of a larger comment being taken out of context.

  It's not. Freaky.

16. i don't mean this in a sarcastic way, but I think McCain must be ill
If someone uses the word "prisoner" when it's clear they meant
"my fellow Americans" or my "fellow Republicans" or whatever...

then clearly there is something wrong. I'm not a doctor, but you just can't misspeak like that and something not be wrong.
And if you do, not to correct yourself?

He must have dementia or Alzheimer's or SOMETHING.
or having some kind of PTSD reaction...who knows.

but it's just not right.

My husband and I think that that is why he skipped out quickly after the debate the other night. Either he's sick, or too tired, or he's somehow not able to do the one on one thing much.
I just don't see how any candidate would cut out while the cameras were still on.

I don't wish him ill, I just don't want him to be president.

But if he is running, and is suffering from something, then clearly his campaign doesn't care about putting "America First"

19. Combine that with his "joke" about always aspiring to be a dictator
said with a totally straight face and no pause when he was taped at that newspaper interview a few weeks ago.

He's a very strange man and I do believe he is mentally unstable.

21. John McCain -literally- has a screw loose. But the worst part isn't that, its...
...that the rest of the machinery that that screw was holding together is vibrating more and more strongly as the pressure of his run for president mounts. Pieces are starting to wiggle free, come loose.

Palin might have been the first highly visible sign that his ability to make informed decisions was impared.

But nomatter, there is something wrong with Senator John McCain.

Literally, in his brain, some process is escalating. Whether it is entirely biological, or psychological or a mix brought on by the pressure of his campaign, I'm not entirely sure.

A process which produces "events" like this. As we approach the next debate and election day, it is likely that this process will become more intense, that more events like not being able to find his way off stage, his extremly angry streaks, video of which have been making the rounds for a while.

Somewhere inside his psyche, a little gyroscope is spinning, trying to "keep it together". But when it hitches we see what is reasonably described as "non-sequiturial" all the way to "disturbing" behavior.

  Very strange.

but caught himself and switched to "Senator." At the time Mr. Femmedem and I thought it was weird. It's in part 3 of the debate, about 2:50 in.
