It must be true because a loud-mouthed old man said so.

This was in the breakfast room at the motel we were staying in last week in Santa Fe. The place was crowded. The old man and his wife were sharing a table next to ours with a couple of other travelers. He spent the entire breakfast explaining the world to his tablemates -- and the rest of the room. He told everyone that, although few realize it, the Federal Reserve is not a government agency. So far, so good. Then he listed the suspicious last names of the people who were behind setting it up.

"Here we go," I said to my wife. "It's the old 'The Jews control the Federal Reserve' story."

The old guy lectured everyone that the Jews control the Federal Reserve. "So when the government used our money for the bail out," he said, "we were bailing out a bunch of Jews."

Let me ask you this straight out: Do you think Jews control the federal reserve? do you think they control the world of finance?

That's hardly what Molly was saying with her original comment.

What was implied however, was that the anti-semitic Nazi's were German. That is an historical fact. Were all German's Nazi's? No, of course not. And to extrapolate that from the first statement is a considerable reach.

I think the direct analogy Ivins was making was not that all Germans are like Buchanan, but that Buchanan is like all Nazis.

I don't think there was any implication that Germans in general are right-wing/ Nazi/ similar to Buchanan in any way. Merely that Buchanan's speech sounded too much like the speeches of one notorious person, who happened to speak German!

Hardly. All Germans are Nazis, or at least all the salient ones. That's the cultural referent.

Perhaps for Ivins, or her readership, this is true, and the only Germans she knows of of any note, or she assumes her readership know of, were Nazis. But when I think of German as a language, or as a culture, "Hitler" is not what my mind goes to. Of course, what associations my mind actually calls up varies over time.

"Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emsigen tritten, O meister, o Jesu, zu hilfen zu dir!" is what currently goes through my impoverished, culturally illiterate little brain when I think of German (from Bach's cantata #78, "Jesu, der du meine Seele").

It's interesting that you saw racism there, because I saw a comparison of Pat Buchanan to Hitler, not to the people of Germany. Many noted journalists have written about the Buchanan speech and the Molly Ivins' quote and reached the same conclusion as I did; NOT ONE felt her remark was "racist".

If you're still having trouble understanding, try an analogy. Imagine some speech by McCain or Palin and then someone smirkily says "It probably sounded better in the original Hebrew". Get it now?

Try reading Buchanan's book, The Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilization and compare his arguments for excluding non-white non-Christian people from entering the US with some of Hitler's speeches. Read his claims that we need to encourage higher birth rates of white Christians so that we don't become a "third world nation". Atrocities such as the Holocaust are only possible when a race or class of people are dehumanized by a consistent rhetoric of hate, by consistently blaming the country's economic and social problems at the feet of that group of people.

But that is beside the point since your claim is that Molly Ivins' remark was "racist" and apparently a slur against all people of German descent. I noticed that you haven't found anyone here who shares your point of view since they apparently also knew that Molly Ivins was speaking of Hitler's speeches and not about all Germans.

I hate people who indoctrinate children into their racist, hateful crap. My mother tried to raise me to be a little racist (Catholic school so I wouldn't be bused, No watching "Roots", and the constant refrain to "turn down that 'screaming n***** music'). Thank God I escaped and woke the hell up.

I was working at the Democracy for America table registering voters and talking about our local chapter of DFA and wound up in a fairly loud debate about which religious group was in "total control of all of the money" -- I insisted that there were some of every religion and some with no religion at all, but I couldn't get anywhere with the guy. Seriously - they don't know who to hate - the Muslims, the Jews, the liberals, the French, the gays... Sick.
