Especially that the NDP picked up a seat here in a fucking BLOWOUT of a race. Jack Harris won St. John's East by like 25,000 votes. My riding went Liberal but it was really close, I was hoping the NDP could have gotten a second seat here.

79. Canadian politics is way different from American......
Most Conservatives I know don't care for Republicans.

Heck, my own father who probably voted for the Conservative candidate has backed Obama from the beginning. Canadian Conservatives are for the most part, not as right-wing as the Republican party is. With probably the exception of small loons in Alberta and the Bible belts. ;)

101. Meet the new Parliament,
same as the old Parliament. Once again, Harper oozes into a strong minority position. It could certainly be much worse, but the only thing that's improved is we no longer have to watch insipid attack ads.

I think Canadian liberals should do what Harper and his buddies are doing, and take some cues from their stateside counterparts. The Democrats are ascendant in America right now, not just because people are fed up with the Bush GOP, but because the Dems have finally started talking directly to voters, working together to develop coherent plans for improving their country, and making their positions clear on relevant issues. And they were able to do these things because they achieved a goal that no other left-leaning party in the history of the world has even attempted: THEY STOPPED BEING A BUNCH OF FUCKING IDIOTS.

132. Yes, it's quite different.
But in order to pass bills/legislation, they(conservatives) need the votes of the opposition parties, so compromises can be made.

However, knowing Harper, this won't happen a lot and he might get a major bill defeated and we will be back to the voting booth in 6 months.

Environmental lawyer vs smarmy git.

If more had strategically voted, she'd have won. It was always known as a horse race between the two - if half the Liberal votes had switched to NDP, it'd be in the bag. She lost by less than 1000 votes; 43-41%.

We could have used a sane voice in this fucking redneck province.

The NDP were really out there. I couldn't even begin to count all her signs in the area - including some bigass houses. Ones you might expect might be conservative. People were really behind her.

I received a couple of visits from them, vs none from the Libs (only a pre-recorded phone call the night before reminding me to vote) and no peep at all from the cons.

Even moreso, she has a very impressive resume. http://www.electlindaduncan.ca/enabout.html

170. Uh, not quite.
I just went through pages and pages of Quebec riding counts.

27 seats would have gone to the liberals. In about 9 cases, the cons had the second highest number of votes (second to BQ), however in most of the liberal cases, the races were quite close. In the Con cases? The BQ generally won by a landslide. Also, even counting those 9, one would have to assume that if the BQ wasn't there, the people who voted for them would vote Con, as the liberals would have won by a landslide if they didn't. And I've generally found that the BQ's non-quebec-centric policies are not exactly like the Cons, and their supporters usually aren't conservative, or fans of them.

There were also at least three ridings where the NDP would have won, as in they were miles ahead of everyone else in at least two cases and JUST behind the BQ. The NDP tied with the liberals once for second place. The cons tied 6 times with the libs for second place, and those were far behind the winner.

I really do not think that harper would have had a majority thanks to quebec if the BQ wasn't there, and CERTAINLY not an easy majority. The numbers are available.
