I just heard from my brother-in-law who lives up in Boise, ID - Micron is laying off 15% staff worldwide, 1500 of which will be at the Boise plant. I don't know if it was reported here but I can safely say I didn't hear one iota of this on any news last week. I don't know what he does, exactly, I just know he works in the NAND memory division. He's been there 15 years.
He says that right now the company is offering two paths:
1. Voluntarily accepting a layoff severance package - 22 weeks severance at a percentage of pay, plus assistance in finding another job; OR
2. Staying until officially laid off but getting no severance package.
I did a little digging since I hadn't heard any of this on the news:
Micron Technology says it will cut its global work force by 15 percent during the next two years, with about 1,500 jobs to be lost in Boise.
The Boise computer-memory chip maker said it will stop making flash memory in Boise for its joint venture with Intel Corp. The shutdown comes in response to falling prices for NAND flash memory. Micron says prices have fallen “significantly below manufacturing costs” as demand has waned and chips have flooded the world market.
Micron spokesman Dan Francisco told the Associated Press that roughly 1,500 people in Boise would lose their jobs. The company employs an estimated 9,000 workers in Boise and about 19,000 worldwide. A 15 percent cut worldwide would be about 2,850 workers.
The job cuts come more than a year after Micron shed about 1,100 jobs in Boise. The company has lost money for seven straight quarters as the brutally cyclical computer-memory market suffers an extended downturn.
