2. How is that a racial slur ?
It's just an abbreviation. If it is then Brits is too and I've never known that cause offence.

14. Seriously? Japs has always been a slur.
And no, that doesn't make "Brit" a slur.

20. It's definitely a slur.......Webster's Dictionary defines it:
Main Entry: Jap
Pronunciation: \ˈjap\
Function: noun or adjective
Date: 1886
usually disparaging : japanese

21. It is is simply an abbreviation in most of the world ...
... but has been termed "a racial slur" if you are on the West of the
Atlantic.

I got moaned at by an American for using the word (with regard to whalers)
who bent himself into a corkscrew trying to avoid admitting that "Brit" and
"Aussie" were equally (in)offensive. Just simple abbreviations, nothing more,
nothing less.

One nation divided by a common language.

3. Jap Is A Slur?
Maybe for a Jewish American Princess.

From one whose parents had friends who were Pacific WWII veterans, Japs was one of the nicest things they called them. Nips and Gooks were more common.

7. You Brought It Up, I Didn't
Seems like someone has a thin skin this morning. Relax and enjoy life.

I've heard far more offensive crap out of Joey's piehole than that.

17. Far more offensive to you maybe
but from my point of view, as a woman who has a Japanese mother and American father, "Jap" is very offensive. Just because he has said other "far more offensive crap" before, doesn't make using this word any less offensive.

so, if I use a "less" offensive slur than nigger to describe a person of African-American heritage, then using the slur is okay?

6. Ugh
I hate that. Let me tell you - if Rachel or Keith talked about the "Krouts" getting their ass handeded to them . . . he'd be all over it. No free pass from me. I want two things:

1. I want Obama to win.

2. Then I want J.S. the next day to come on air and rant about the "N*gger in the WH" so that he loses his fucking job.

And HE is going to do it. He's angry beyond belief that a N-bomb is winning. In his little mind, this was not supposed to happen. The nerve of a black person to have the audacity to run for the POTUS and get as far as he has . . .

10. I wouldn't know
Sorry - I don't use those types of words to define people. My bad. I know N-Bomb and Zebra because those are the ones I've been called the most in my life.

16. No problem
:pals: No need to apologize. I don't always come off the way I intend to at D.U. I was just trying to make the point that jackasses like Morning Joe blow the stupidest crap out of proportion that is said or done by Obama. If Obama said he didn't like Cheerios - Joe would harp on the fact Obama is "Racist Against Cheerios!"

9. I wouldn't say it's a term of endearment
and it's not a word I use but I wouldn't call it a racial slur. Is it any different than calling British people "Brits" or calling an Australian an "Aussie"?

13. I'm taking a guess here
and have to tell you that back in the '50s half of my friends were referred to as Yids and equally half of their friends were referred to as Goys - just a bi-product of living in mixed community with multi religion schools. No offense was taken or intended. Times have changed now I'd guess they are both unacceptable expressions these days not that I would now have cause to use either.

24. if in the USA
the expression Jap is regarded as derogatory then so be it and it shouldn't be used THERE.

However - as the USA isn't in any position to dictate what names by way of abbreviation, if for no other reason, the rest of the world uses there is no real point in arguing between ourselves.
