If we win big in November...
Will the Democratic Underground still be underground?

I'm so unused to feeling like I might be part of the majority in this country, it's a little disorienting to think "we" might be bigger than we've thought for the last 8 years.

I remember being disoriented this way back in 92 when Clinton got in, but then reality spun so many things off in negative directions -- from "Don't Ask Don't Tell" onward -- it felt like we left wingers were as much a minority as ever.

I suppose it's too early to tell where we'll be on November 5th or after the inauguration, but I'm hoping that we lefties can come up from the underground.

So what would need to change for us to feel like we've really arrived at America as the place that grants equal justice and liberty to all?

1. When Clinton came in the Republicans weren't...
nearly as scorned as they are now. Clinton beat Bush the First, not Reagan's legacy, and Gingrich came to power as a ghost of Reagan. No possibility of that happening again-- until everyone forgets what a mess we're in now.

We'll still be under fire, and they will be shameless about reaching under every rock they can find to dig up some disgusting slug of a smear or lie, but they won't have nearly the credibility or power they had. But, we'll be under fire because we're running the show, and that makes a difference.

(As long as we don't fuck it up)

3. We're all going to need a lot of therapy.
I'm not sure what form that therapy should take but I for one am going to need to learn how to get my life back. I feel like I've really been wounded and I fear that as an American it will take a long time before I can feel like I did during the Kennedy years. I know I speak only for myself but I think many of you out there know what I mean. Hopeful. That's what it is.
For me, one of the worst lessons learned from the last 8 years has been the revelation of the mindset of so many of my fellow Americans.
On the other hand, I have witnessed some incredible courage and committment from activists, particularly here on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. In Washington, D.C. too amongst those that gather for major protests.
If they steal the election I don't know what I'm going to do but I'm getting ready for the possibility. I'm tired and I'm older and I'm not sure I can keep up the fight, yet I know I can't swallow more years of this horrific existence.
