David Gergen says he heard that McCain's plan was to try to goad Obama into some kid of outburst

if he ditched journalistic ethics and decided to help McCain and sure enough he did it. The worst one I predicted was the both campaigns are so dirty and nasty, John McCain why dont you go first and tell us how bad you feel about what John Lewis said about you question. When I wrote my journal about Schieffer's McCain bias I said that was how you were going to be able to tell if he was cheating for McCain. If he was, he would ask that question. Than God Obama was ready with a zinger come back. Put Schieffer in his place.

He then went on to say he should try to salvage whatever downticket races he can, and to try to go out with some honor. I think it's too late for the last part.

who he seems to be. He really is patient and kind and rational. He really is interested in learning and not just spouting off. He really does like working with people, all kinds of people, even when he disagrees with them, in order to get a good result for everyone. He really is an amazing person.

The Republicans cannot imagine that a person can get anywhere on this earth without either 1) being born into an advantageous position (i.e., knowing the right people), or 2) pushing others out of the way and shoving and clawing and screaming to get ahead. They just can't believe that really being a person of integrity, being an honest person who cares about others is what wins friends and influences people. It's kind of funny but also very sad. It tells you so much about the country club to yacht investment class. They are lost. They live in a hell of their own creation.
