Dutch abortion ship sparks controversy in Spain
A Spanish pro-life group said it plans to protest the arrival on Thursday of a Dutch boat that is offering to provide abortions that circumvent Spain's strict laws.
The boat is due to anchor off the Mediterranean port of Valencia, the Dutch non-profit organisation Women on Waves said on its web site.

From Friday, it will offer abortions on the ship in international waters under the Netherlands' more liberal abortion laws.

This "symbolic initiative" will allow "abortions outside Spanish law for the first time in Spain's recent history, but without violating it," said Spanish gynaecologist Josep Lluis Carbonell, one of the promoters.

But it has already sparked controversy.

Valencia's conservative mayor Rita Barbera termed the plan a "provocation that has sparked indignation."

1. Creeeeeeeeepy. So I'm pregnant in Spain and I'm thinking, oh
a Dutch ship is coming to port today, I can get rid of this.

I think a lot is left out of the story... well, the 5 paragraphs of the story that were posted...

3. It beats doing blow jobs
to get enough money for a ticket to Amsterdam. It also beats going to one of the local butchers and winding up maimed or dead.

Antiabortion laws don't stop abortion. They only stop the safe ones.

Antiabortion laws kill women. That's the bottom line.

8. So I've gone and found the info that the OP's story left out:
The Women on Waves ship is in Spain at the invitation of 33 spanish women's rights groups.

I feel much better now, the OP's story was written as if the ship suddenly and imposingly appeared, but that's not the case at all.

Visiting http://www.womenonwaves.org also taught me more about the struggle for women's rights throughout the world.
Women on Waves visits Spain at the invitation of 33 Spanish organisations (please click here for list) concerned with a better abortion law.The ship will arrive the 16 th of October at 17.00 in the yacht harbor of Valencia (former America's Cup).

By inviting of the Women on Waves ship, the Spanish organizations want to urge the Spanish government to:

* Remove abortion from the penal code. Abortion is a regular medical procedure and must be legislated as such.

* Abortion is a right. It should be guaranteed as a regular medical procedure and available in the public health system.

* Guarantee access to abortion care until 24 weeks of pregnancy as is recently supported by a scientific committee of the English Government.<1>

* Guarantee sexual education

* Free access to different types of contraceptives and full financial reimbursement for abortion care as is also normal for other medical procedures.

* Follow the recommendations of The World health Organisation (WHO) concerning medical abortions.<2>
