More republican racism in support of Mccain

Obama's face on a donkey's body, labeled "United States Food Stamps . . .

GOP mailing depicts Obama on food stamp

07:10 AM PDT on Thursday, October 16, 2008

The Press-Enterprise -- The latest newsletter by an Inland Republican women's group depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles.

The October newsletter by the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated says if Obama is elected his image will appear on food stamps -- instead of dollar bills like other presidents. The statement is followed by an illustration of "Obama Bucks" -- a phony $10 bill featuring Obama's face on a donkey's body, labeled "United States Food Stamps."

The GOP newsletter, which was sent to about 200 members and associates of the group by e-mail and regular mail last week, is drawing harsh criticism from members of the political group, elected leaders, party officials and others as racist.

The group's president, Diane Fedele, said she plans to send an apology letter to her members and to apologize at the club's meeting next week. She said she simply wanted to deride a comment Obama made over the summer about how as an African-American he "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further," Fedele said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I absolutely apologize to anyone who was offended. That clearly wasn't my attempt."

She said she also wasn't trying to make a statement linking Obama and food stamps, although her introductory text to the illustration connects the two: "Obama talks about all those presidents that got their names on bills. If elected, what bill would he be on????? Food Stamps, what else!"

1. The Obama campaign declined to comment. It's the campaign's policy to not address such attacks

. . . said Gabriel Sanchez, a California spokesman for the campaign.

Apparently, that's the 'policy' here at DU with over 80 views and not ONE person bothered to comment.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother to come here.

2. Why do these people think that can put out stuff like that and not get called on it?

5. so much of this has been undercover
There is a new generation of Americans, who, I think, would rather it just go away on its own than confront it directly. I believe that encourages folks, sometimes people we work beside every day, to regard these expressions as an acceptable form of discourse. It does take a strong, direct reaction to dissuade others from erupting with their own offensive bias.

It hasn't helped that McCain's campaign has encouraged these racist expressions in support of the republican nominee with their innuendo, their whispering campaign, and their outright racism and bigotry from the podium.

6. actually, his church was only one aspect of his life experience
And, his life experience was distorted by the media and his detractors on the right-wing (in support of McCain) to make it appear as if Obama embraced, part and parcel, the more controversial statements his pastor had made; to the exclusion of his extensive, diverse biography and to the exclusion of his statements in condemnation of those controversial remarks.

The notion that Obama isn't 'one of us' is absurd. He is the totality of his American experience; his American heritage has roots in the black community, but he is also a product of a diverse background and a diversity of experiences and associations which encompasses much more than the black-white politics of the moment or of the past.

4. GOP SOP
No surprise. Republicans can only scapegoat since they have no agenda that benefits the people.

7. This is pathetic and that woman weaseling her way out of it is shameful
Why apologize to the members? They eat that shit up and she'll wink and nod and all will be back to normal.

On a positive note - someone in her organization must have been offended by it. Maybe someone who is no longer on the McCain Straight To Hell Express? I sense weakness in their armor.
