Food bank Friday! 10-17-08
Please remember your local food bank when you go grocery shopping this weekend!

Print out the flyer below and make copies for your friends, family or co-workers to take with you when you go grocery shopping.

You don't have to pick up everything on the list, just remember to pick up something.

Other ways you can help

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) http://www.chiron-communications.com/farms.html

Second Harvest http://www.feedingamerica.org/?show_nce=1

Find and donate "free after rebate" items offered by many stores http://www.salescircular.com/

This winter will be pretty bad in some areas, so even if you can't make it to the food bank, send money or help out when you can.

And, last, but not least, please support candidates and policies that guarantee livable wages.

3. Thanks for the reminder
We are going to focus on giving to the Food Bank this year; I know a lot of people won't be able to give, and a lot more people are going to need their help.

4. In the previous food bank threads ...
... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4216793&mesg_id=4216793

Several people mentioned how some food banks were running low on food and getting even more clients.

Plus, winter's coming.

5. Food banks are such a necessity
And the giving is so direct.

We have a good, well-supported Food Bank here (Second Harvest), but I suspect that they will be hurting for donations this year.

7. another good tip for this time of year
many grocery stores offer cheap frozen turkeys - as low as $.19 per pound - if you buy over a certain amount, often $75 or $100. I take advantage of this to get a big turkey for a really low price and donate it to the food bank. I don't eat meat but don't mind buying it for those who do.

8. Rebates are a way to stretch your contribution
Both Walgreens and RiteAid have rebate programs that offer full price refunds on many items. Shampoo, toothpaste, etc. - it varies every month

You can pick up a flyer at the store or make a shopping list on-line.

Both stores have on-line redemption programs - you basically just enter your receipt info and request the rebate. Take it in a gift card and Walgreens adds 10% to it.

If you're a coupon clipper, bring those to the store for more savings.

14. I love that you are doing this- thank you!
I might also add, if you know a family in need, you can give them the food directly. Sometimes you can only get so much from the food bank and sometimes that isn't enough.
