Oh, For Crying Out LOUD!
The hand-wringing here is unbelievable!

Senator Obama is CLEARLY going to win the election and become the next POTUS. It will be a historic moment when he accepts this huge responsibility. I wish him all the luck in the Universe, because he is gonna need it to deal with the terrible economic avalanche coming this way.

For each and every fret and squeamish writhings about the small numbers of Hitler-lovin-racist-assholes and fundi-religious freakazoids and other such simpletons elevated to newsworthy status by the newsfotainment world, there are 1000 people who SEE we are ALL in a world of trouble and Mr. Obama exudes calm (yeah, and hope) whereas Senator McCain exudes well, anti-hope. For many reasons, but his health (and age) is certainly questionable.

This is not to say that a cancer-survivor should not be able to be considered for President. But my father, RIP Jack, died a few weeks ago from lung cancer and it is a horrible disease and man, when it makes it's self known. Cancer is fast and brutal.

My view is that the Republicans are throwing this election. C'mon it looks like a Jerry Springer show when you read about McCain or Palin! Yeah, some diehards will vote for them, but believe me, a HELL of a lot of them are going to stay home on voting day. Usually the folks who are racist are sexist as well, so it's unlikely they'll be voting for Palin (by default).

Yeah, I know, there is a contingent who WILL vote R, just cuz. But one needs to remember this. About 50-60% of eligible voters in America have not been casting their vote for the last decade or so because they see little difference in the outcome of the two-party system, thus do not have allegiance to either of those parties.

Registered Independent voters will put Obama way over the top, this time.

So. I wish him oceans of strength to do the right thing once in office.

5. The hand wringing here is completely believable
1. 2000 and 2004. That should be enough to end the discussion right there.
2. Depending on which poll you look at, Obama is up as little as 2 or as much as 7, depending on who you believe and the poll methodology. That's a heckuva spread.
3. Now that the GOP has just resorted to flat out BS, who knows what they'll say next. It'll probably involve goat sacrifice and an American Flag; only a Constitutional Amendment will be able to remedy it.

Look, I hear ya -- but I'm going to wring my hands until he takes the Oath and the Bushes are on the plane.

7. Okay, You opened up the can.
So, I'll respond to the worms that are so freaking irritating.

No doubt that the Supreme Court stole Al Gore's Presidency. But why did he concede so easily?
No doubt Diebold stole votes in many place over many elections, but why did Kerry concede so quickly?

Okay, I'll quit being coy and say it. Why are these elections so fucking CLOSE?

10. Gore should have fought
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 10:35 PM by OmahaBlueDog
When Dick Nixon was in Gore's position in '60, he decided (at some point) to drop his fight "for the good of the nation." Gore, I suspect, reached the same conclusion. I say he should have fought and we should have proceded as if the Bush Presidency were not legitimate.

I think Kerry figured he was in a no win (my recollection is that Edwards wanted a fight)

Trust me -- if this thing is close, McSame and the Republicant's will try to get this thing into the courts they've stacked.

14. Here's what I'm getting at.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 11:06 PM by Ripley
It seems to be conventional wisdom that half of America votes and they vote pretty much 49% Democratic and 49% Republican and the odd percentage points left over are for a myriad of third parties. That CW also assumes that the other half doesn't vote because they are either stupid or lazy or incarcerated or ignorant. Big mistake.

Lots of people don't vote because they see NO DIFFERENCE between the 2-party monopoly on our government. Anyway, by the stats, only 25% or so of the population is actually participating in this so-called Democracy.

I'm not sure of any statistics, but I'd bet You that there is a very large number of Americans registered as Independent because they don't trust either party. I was simply being positive in my OP that they would choose Senator Obama.

If it's close, then answer the fucking cry of the People, Democrats! The People want You to ACT LIKE AN OPPOSITION PARTY, AND NOT AGREE WITH THE REPUBLICAN AGENDA nearly all the time. Show us the BIG DIFFERENCES in Your monetary policies, Your Iraq policy, Your social Policies and THEN, You would have a landslide.

Catering to the right has been disastrous in the past.

Like I said, when Obama is there. Faced with the problems. I hope he can at least stop the monthly billions of dollar cost of Iraq. Will he hear us People?

8. My sympathies to you and your family.
Lung cancer is nasty and brutal.

I'll be keeping myself busy beginning Mon. driving people to the polls to vote, and filling in at my county headquarters for the remaining days of early voting, and then to regroup to get to election day.

I think it is normal to be anxious at this stage, (GAWD my spouse has been driving me crazy the past 3 weeks with his poll watching, testiness and pacing) and I'm gonna try to stay busy to alleviate mine.

9. I remember the night of the 2004 election.
I went to bed happily believing that Kerry had won, and woke up to the nightmare of bush winning. Never assume.

However, I really believe that Obama will win by a great margin. I've decided not to worry about it anymore. The stress just wears on me. I will vote a straight Democratic ticket and hope that the majority of Americans will do the same.

12. "Eternal vigilance"
Hand wringing, nay-saying, "conspiracy theories," "chicken littles," or "Eternal vigilance?"

It is possible to hope for the best and plan for the worst.

Bringing into the open those possibilities of "the worst" may be no more than bringing into awareness those things of which we need to be...aware.

Eternal vigilance. It's how you keep FREEDOM.

13. Throwing the election
I have come to the same conclusion, but have a hard time figuring out why. Could be they know things are so fucked up they want no part of it. They don't believe Obama can fix it and they will have him to beat up on for many years. I think they are wrong, if that is their reasoning. I believe that many Americans will rise to the occasion and accept Obamas plans, even if it means more taxes. I am really glad I make enough to pay taxes, as the alternative is not pretty. Maybe they think the fix is in. If that is their reason ,I believe they are for a really big surprise, the best one we could ever give them. Whatever the reason I believe the matter is out of their grimy hands anyway, as evidenced by St. Louis. Good luck to us all.

15. Because the next Presidency will not be easy, and not likely to be a success in 4 years
I believe that is why Romney, Rudy, and Huckabee dropped out so early. They are sacrificing McCain to try for another big takeover in 2012. And McCain doesn't even realize it. The repukes only hope right now is to be out of power and to criticize incessantly. If they won this Presidency, the repuke party as it stands now would be dead. That might be worth it, but the country would be destroyed in the process. At least there is a hope if a dem gets in.
