The whole "English Only" thing..
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 04:33 PM by Locut0s
So the local free community rag had this on the front page today:

http://www.canada.com/northshorenews/news/story.html?id=ffe4f536-b9ba-4f09-8de5-33628f2db7f6

I know some people here are going to agree with this decision but personally I find such views insulting and semi fascist. There have been many similar stories in the US. Note that they aren't talking about staff talking to patients but use of an foreign language at any time.

Sorry fixed the link.

1. Some people seem to have a pathological fear of hearing foreign languages around them.
Seriously, it's almost enough to qualify as its own disorder in the DSM.

4. Even in foreign countries
I've lived two and have been a tourist in three other different countries and I cannot tell you how many times I've heard some some asshole in Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, Germany and France yell, "Doesn't anybody speak fucking english around here?"

3. I believe

We show do everything to encourage people to learn english, english should be the national language, but throwing people in jail for speaking another language is wrong.

6. Exactly. There's a big difference between "encouraged" and "required under threat of punishment."
Sure, it's good to know the language of your adopted country, but it's also difficult to learn a whole new language as an adult, especially if you're working long hours just to get by.
