I'd love to volunteer to canvass or phone bank but I'm afraid
I'm afraid if I run up an undecided or McCain supporter, I'll just lose it and end up alienating a potential Obama voter.

I phone banked for Kerry but the last four years have mad me so insanely angry at Republicans and "undecided" voters that I can't do it.

So, I'm volunteering to drive people to the polls on election day.

2. Volunteering for whatever suits ya will get him elected
Blockwalking was tough this weekend in a very red precinct.

There are some very rude, ill-mannered, bubba people out there. We just had to smile and walk away. To try to change those morans was a waste of breath.

3. door knocking and phone banking for GOTV will be talking to supporters
It is very, very important that we get all of our supporters to the polls. You won't have to worry about the undecideds in the last few days. Please volunteer to help with GOTV.

4. If you go out now, you will be getting out the vote, and they will
be Democratic voters who just need to be reminded to be at their voting locations and vote.

If you run into Joe, the quasi plumber, tell him that Barack's plan for the economy is steady and will help our entire economy. Then smile and wish him a great day.

It's easier now although, it has always been a very good experience.

I'm doing it again. If I can do it without getting mad, believe me you can ,too.

5. Also, you can ask to do a "volunteer canvasss"...
...calling or visiting known Dems to request their help with the campaign.

6. I'm very good at being friendly and polite to people who I disagree with.
A friendly reminder to vote is not too offensive to anyone. If they have questions I'm happy to talk, and if they are leaning against my candidate I would not spend much time trying to persuade them, other than to suggest they read a web page or something.

I remember one guy in the Kerry effort who would open the call with a gun control spiel. Living in a rural area in Oregon I didn't think that message was going to win any points. I believe in letting the other person pick the topic if there is going to be a discussion. They are the ones who know why they may be uncomfortable voting for your candidate. Other than that, friendly and brief is the best way to go.

8. Just talk to the volunteer coordinator
about what you would be comfortable doing. They'll find a task suited for you and be happy to have you.

I had undecideds on my list, but you can tell who can or can't be persuaded. Some of them will just try to waste your time so you're not out there convincing others.

Don't walk away from a chance to help change the world.

11. I volunteered for election day.
I told the guy from the Obama campaign who called me about voluteering that I didn't want to phone bank because I only have a cell, and my plan isn't that great. I also told him I didn't want to drive because I am unemployed and the gas would be too much.

He said, "No problem" and he listed a bunch of things I could do for them. I told him I would very happy to help out.

If there are some things you don't want to do, there are a bunch of other things they need to have done. So please, volunteer.

I counted votes during a past election. It was interesting. Not fun in the sense most people consider fun but I enjoyed it.

I am going to get involved every year from now on.

13. I've got the same issue
I am so angry at Republicans that I'm afraid I might go back to a particularly disgusting person's house for a visit. I'd drive away more votes than I helped bring in :(

14. Yesterday got a "Obama's too much like Hitler"
and wasn't even sure I heard right, took it a moment for it to digest, and in that moment a slew of emotions ran thru me, and then almost ended up laughing at the absurdity. Probably only a second or so passed, but it felt longer and I just decided to hang up without a word-nothing was adequate, anyway.

*we only called registered Dems, but the guy's wife is the Dem, and she doesn't love there anymore. gee, wonder why?

When I turned to ladies beside me and told them what happened the they agreed it was best to hang up in those situations. They were shocked, though, never had heard of a call that. Then a few minutes later got a guy who responded with "too bad for you" when I introduced myself as being with the Obama campaign. just hung up on him, too, but was so tempted to be rude and or clever. Been trying to think of something that sounds polite or supersweetnice that makes them sound lamer in contrast. or something over their heads, hmmm.

Normally I'm very emotional about politics, and do have to watch myself in person even with close friends (especially the Dems not sure about voting for Gregoire, our Dem guv, who is in a very tight race with a crazy man) but being in that environment surrouned by sane kindred spirits was calming and kept me conscious of my demeanor. and the jerks only motivated me more to stay longer and keep people like them out of posistions of power.
