1. I looked that up yesterday ...
the average cost of a movie tix (by my estimation) is $10, which means they're selling on average 58.4 seats ... a day. :spray:

I wonder what his next "blockbuster" will be?

With 3 or 4 shows a day, 15 - 20 people per show.

Really packing them in, aren't they?

2. we saw Religulous last weekend!
We really enjoyed it. You can't take Maher too personally but I thought that he made some good points.

while the receipts are for the total run so far...?

7. Other weeks they have been more even in gross. Of course Carol started in 3x the number of theaters
so while it was bringing in the same amount of money it was much smaller per theater.

9. They are only bombs if they don't make money
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 03:15 PM by Winterblues
I suspect the cost of American Carol was ten fold that of Religulous and that one will make money and the other will lose money "Big Time"

11. A generic comedy should easily trounce a generic documentary.
Documentaries always do poorly. Even shitty comedies do great. Epic Movie, for example.

12. Not at all.......
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 05:14 PM by ProudToBeBlueInRhody
"Religulous" cost 2 million to make, and "Carol" was at least 10 million (I thought I heard 20 mil, actually).

For a 500 theater movie for it's entire run, "Religulous" has done very well.

14. Religulous cost $3 million to make; American Carol about $20 million
I think your defintion of "bomb" needs some clarity.

21. General rule: Movie must make about 3 times its cost to at least break even.
Depending on how much the studio gets, the filmmakers get and the theaters get.

So Religulous produced at $3 mil breaks even at $9 mil (which it already has), while Carol produced at $20 mil must make $50-60 mil just to break even. (They've made about $7 mil so far)

10. 13% on the tomatometer
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/an_american_carol/

It will be listed as one of the worst films of the year. Top complaint? Just not funny. Go figure. Conservatives have no sense of humor.

Religulous is at 69%, which is not bad given the subject matter.

13. I loved on opening weekend.......
.......how the freepers bragged "Carol" made more money by about 200,000 dollars appearing on three times the screens. They didn't care how stupid their logic sounded. And THEY are supposed to be experts on business?

22. Pretty good opening for W: $11 mil, 1600 theaters, $7000 per theater avg.
Seems like W the movie will be more of a success than W the Presidency.

Oh, the irony of it all.
