Need Help W/Palin Email Circulating....
I have ONE family member that is voting for McSame/Failin and there's no changing his mind. (The rest of my family is pure Dem) Let's just say that the only reason for his choice is due to financial reasons. (Hasn't had to pay much in the way of taxes under the decider and wants it to stay that way)

Anyway, I wouldn't typically post this shit here, but it's beginning to piss me off getting these types of emails from him day after day.....Anyone have any good (not smart-ass) responses? Help....it's driving me nuts.

Subject: I DIDN'T KNOW THIS.....DID YOU?

It is interesting that the Missile Command has begun manning the missiles with National Guard troops. That really does beg the question of who really is in command of such a force. Apparently Gov. Palin has had command of at least 11 multiple warhead missiles for several years.

Question: What is America 's first line of missile
interceptor defense that protects the entire United States ?

Answer: 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard.

Question: What is the ONLY National Guard unit on
permanent active duty?

Answer: 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard

Question: Who is the Commander in Chief of the 49th Missile
Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard?

Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

Question: What U.S. governor is routinely briefed on
highly classified military issues, homeland security, and
counter terrorism?

Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

Question: What U.S. governor has a higher classified
security rating than either candidate of the Democrat Party?

Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain
in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used
to keeping secrets. She can be entrusted with our national
security, because she already is.

Posted on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 Official: Palin's never issued an order to Alaska Guard
By George Bryson | Anchorage Daily news
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — When presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain introduced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate last Friday, the Arizona senator emphasized her role as the commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard.

Later, when questions were raised about Palin's lack of experience in national and international affairs, the McCain campaign pointed again to her military command experience as governor. Some reporters have tried to follow up.

"Can you tell me one decision that she made as commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard?" CNN journalist Campbell Brown asked Monday while interviewing McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds. "Just one?"

Bounds couldn't, because Palin has never personally ordered the state guard to do anything.

Instead, here's what he said: "Any decision she has made as the commander of the (Alaska) National Guard that's deployed overseas is more of a decision than Barack Obama's been making as he's been running for president for the last two years."

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin talks to CBS news anchor Katie Couric in their interview last Wednesday.
WASHINGTON - When Russian bombers approach American airspace and U.S. Air Force fighters are scrambled, Sarah Palin's phone doesn't ring.

The Alaska governor has no command authority over the guardians of U.S. airspace despite her recent suggestion otherwise.

"She doesn't have any role in that process," Air Force Maj. Allen Herritage, spokesman for the Alaska North American Aerospace Defense Command, told the Daily News.

"The authority to launch and respond to a Russian incursion lies with the Alaska NORAD Region commander" - Air Force Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins, he said.

35. Here is a sample of the response I received...
Dear Friend,

Thank you for joining the fight against the lies, false attacks, and smear campaigns targeting Barack Obama and designed to create fear and division at a time that calls for unity and solutions. No one of us can put an end to these attacks, but together we can set the record straight.

We’ve received the message you sent and will evaluate it to inform the campaign’s pushback strategy to this growing problem. Please continue to send us each smear you receive -- even if you receive the same one multiple times from different sources.

When possible, please forward messages just as they came to you, without changing the subject or sending the message as an attachment. And feel free to include your friends and family on the message you send us -- if we’ve developed a response already, we’ll send it to everyone you included.

If you haven't already, it's important that you provide the truth to whoever passed along the smear that you reported. Refer to http://www.FightTheSmears.com to get the facts you need in order to fight back on a wide variety of smears.

Meanwhile, here are a few facts about Barack that you may want to pass on:

* Barack Obama is working for middle class Americans. The Obama-Biden tax plan includes a tax cut of $1,000 for more than 150 million working Americans. The plan will also eliminate income taxes altogether for more than 7 million senior citizens who make less than $50,000 per year. Finally, Obama’s plan will provide an average of $500 to 10 million homeowners, the majority of whom earn less than $50,000 per year. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/#tax-relief; http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/publications/url.cfm?ID=411693

* Barack Obama will make healthcare affordable for your family. If you like your employer-offered healthcare, you can keep it -- at a reduced cost. If you don’t, or you don’t have health care, you will have a choice of new, affordable health insurance options. You will not be turned away -- regardless of preexisting conditions. Obama will help small businesses provide affordable health insurance to their employees with a Small Business Health Tax Credit. Read more about the Obama-Biden healthcare plan here: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/

* Barack Obama knows that the problems we’re facing in this election are too serious to let the politics of manufactured controversy and fake outrage dominate. He wants to bring our troops home from Iraq, so we can focus on Afghanistan and track down the terrorists who attacked us. And he’s proposed a detailed plan for using alternative energy sources to relieve America’s dependence on foreign oil within 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. See more about Obama’s plan for change here: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/planforchange_ad/

* Despite many email smears claiming something else, Barack Obama is a committed Christian and an American citizen. After being raised by a single mother and by his grandparents in a modest household in Hawaii, Barack studied hard and won scholarships and loans to attend Columbia University and later Harvard Law School, where he became president of the Harvard Law Review. After law school, he returned to Chicago to give back to society as a community organizer and later as a civil rights lawyer and law professor. http://www.barackobama.com/learn/meet_barack.php

Please forward this to anyone you know who has received a smear email about Barack. Together we can make sure these negative and divisive attacks don't affect this election.

Thanks for your help,
Obama-Biden Watchdog Team

NORAD: Sarah Palin has no role in guarding U.S. airspace despite claims in Katie Couric interview

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Tuesday, September 30th 2008, 5:21 PM

WASHINGTON - When Russian bombers approach American airspace and U.S. Air Force fighters are scrambled, Sarah Palin's phone doesn't ring.

The Alaska governor has no command authority over the guardians of U.S. airspace despite her recent suggestion otherwise.

"She doesn't have any role in that process," Air Force Maj. Allen Herritage, spokesman for the Alaska North American Aerospace Defense Command, told the Daily News.
-------------------------
Moscow's bombers have skirted Alaskan airspace 20 times, thugh they have not violated it, during Palin's governorship, officials said.

When F-15 and F-22 interceptors scrambled from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage in response, John McCain's running mate was not speed-dialed with the news.

"The commander does not call the governor," Herritage said.

Steven Biegun, a McCain foreign policy adviser, said Palin is informed of the fly-bys by her National Guard commander.

The Alaska Air Guard, which Palin oversees, performs airspace-watching missions only under NORAD command, and does not fly interception sorties.

The Sarah Palin FAQ

http://www.slate.com/id/2199362

Cindy McCain and others have asserted that Alaska's proximity to Russia has contributed to Palin's foreign-policy knowledge. What dealings has she had with Russia?

The campaign has not come up with any. Palin has never been to Russia.

What command experience does Palin have as head of the Alaska National Guard?

The Alaska governor has no command role with National Guard troops engaged in combat operations or with the 49th Missile Defense Battalion, which is stationed in Alaska. She does command the National Guard when it comes to natural disasters and homeland security. These issues are handled by a member of her cabinet, Maj. Gen. Craig, the adjutant general for Alaska, who also handles veterans' affairs. Palin has called up the guard only once, in 2007, to fight wildfires. They were on standby for a 2007 whaling conference during which they expected protesters but were never summoned.

Veterans Group Links Sarah Palin to Problems in Alaska National Guard

By PA Staff Writers

10-14-08, 11:54 am

A preliminary report released earlier this month by Veterans for America (VFA) held Gov. Sarah Palin in no small part responsible for enormous difficulties faced by Alaska National Guard members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the report, "the post-deployment needs of Alaska National Guard members and their families remain largely unmet."

The report described the Alaska National Guard's leadership as having "an inadequate understanding of the full range of post-combat issues facing those who served abroad from the Alaska Guard." The report noted that this short-coming resulted directly from "inadequate leadership" on the part of the Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin.

The preliminary report, based on interviews with military families and veterans of the Guard, indicated that access to Veterans' health care facilities is the most pressing problem Guard members and veterans face. One-fourth of Alaska Guard members live in rural areas that are at least 60 miles from nearest veterans health care centers. Travel expenses from the most isolated areas can reach close to $1,500 for a single hospital visit.

-----------
Interviewees for the report also told VFA that essentially no outreach programs exist for returning women Guard members.

The report recommended that because of this situation and the condition of the Guard, the US should not deploy the Alaska Guard overseas until "the situation is remedied."

The report called on Gov. Sarah Palin, who officially heads the Alaska National Guard, to make health care services available in rural areas throughout the state. Palin should order that mental health screenings should be mandatory. She should also make an immediate assessment of the needs of families of deployed Guard members to ensure that the thousands of family members are adequately cared for. The report also called for more "dwell time" between deployments to help soldiers heal physically and mentally.

25. Easy, Those that assert, must prove.
Ask for links to these 'facts' from reputable sources. Not some repuke talking point website, but real, actual people in some sort of government position or first-hand knowledge of these 'facts'.

From the New York Times:
-snip-
Alaska has been crucial to American military interests since long before it became a state in 1959. Now, Adak, in the Aleutian Islands, is scheduled to become the home port of the Sea-Based X-band Radar, a long-delayed system built on a converted oil rig that is critical to the ground-based system’s ability to track enemy missiles.

While the 49th is an Alaska National Guard unit, Colonel Hildreth reports to Col. Michael L. Yowell, commander of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade, based in Colorado.

I found that in ten minutes. The chain of command lies outside of Alaska.

distorting the truth.
The righties have seized upon two similar sounding names, the 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard and the 49th Military Police Brigade of the Alaska State Defense Force, in order to make Sarah look like she's in command of the missile defense system of the U.S. Army.

While it's true that the 49th Missile Defense Battalion is part of the Alaska National Guard it is under the command of the U.S. Army 100th Missile Defense Brigade based in Colorado. The Alaska governor is not in command of any National Guard unit that is actively deployed with the U.S. Army. While the 49th is an Alaska National Guard unit, Colonel Hildreth reports to Col. Michael L. Yowell, commander of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade, based in Colorado.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/10/us/10greely.html

What she actually commands is the Alaska State Defense Force which is a state militia not associated with any active duty National Guard Force. In 1987 the name of the militia was changed to the
Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF) to avoid confusion with the Alaska National
Guard. In 2004 the name was changed to the 49th Military Police Brigade (49th MP
BDE) http://www.ak-prepared.com/asdf/Acrobat_Docs/49th%20MP%20BDE%20handout.pdf]

I know it all sounds confusing and that is just their point. Sarah does not command any National Guard Unit that is deployed under U.S. Army orders. No governor does.

32. Oh god...it's a federalized unit...
Listen close, lurking freepers, and let this old sergeant explain a few things to you.

By federal statute, the Army can only have a certain amount of people in it. This is called the Endstrength, and for Fiscal Year 2008 it's 525,400 troops. It's also limited to a certain number of units. If the Army wants to activate a new unit, such as this 49th Missile Defense Battalion, a lot of times it's easier to put the unit in the National Guard. This isn't the first time they've done this either--in the 1980s, the US Army was going to field the German-made Roland surface to air missile system. They bought one battalion's worth, found out they were really nice, then ran out of money to buy any more. The battalion set of Roland equipment wound up in the New Mexico National Guard.

Let's look at this "commander in chief of the 49th Missile Defense Battalion" thing. National Guard units can be federalized, and the 49th is. This means that for all intents and purposes, the unit is part of the United States Army. Sarah Palin has NO control over this unit. It is subordinate to the Space and Missile Defense Command at Colorado Springs, Colorado, and its highest authority comes from the president of the United States.

Now...as to the assertion Governor Palin is cleared higher than either Senator Obama or Senator Biden...well, that's true. Following the 9/11 attacks, Shrub yanked the security clearances of all Members of Congress except for the Speaker of the House, House Minority Leader, Senate Majority and Minority Leaders, and the chairmen and ranking members of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees. In the days before Bush took office, Members of Congress had serious security clearances--I worked at a facility that produced and handled a LOT of Top Secret information, and that was visited by many Members of Congress, and you could tell those people anything. So yes, she has a clearance. I would imagine that as the CinC of the national guard, the governor of West Virginia has a clearance similar to that of Governor Palin's. (I chose West Virginia because it's landlocked and has no active duty military presence.)

So..basically, the Army is hiding this unit on the National Guard's books. The idea that she has anything substantive to do with it is strange indeed.
