Katherine Harris's Troutman cousin sues the Alexander cousin's line for business losses.
Baxter Troutman and J. D. Alexander are cousins of Katherine Harris. Troutman is a member of the Florida House, and Alexander is a state senator.

All is not well in the world of the late Ben Hill Griffin.

Baxter Troutman Sues Family Over Business Losses

On Thursday, state Rep. Baxter G. Troutman of Winter Haven sued his cousin, state Sen. J.D. Alexander of Lake Wales, along with Alexander's father, John R. Alexander. The lawsuit claims Alico Inc. - a family-controlled, LaBelle-based business - has suffered more than $1 million in losses because of mismanagement.

The lawsuit claims the Alexanders "negligently, carelessly, and intentionally failed to perform their duties" and funds and assets of Alico were wasted.

..."Troutman said filing the lawsuit against family members was a necessary business decision.

"I feel it's my fiduciary responsibility to stand up for the little guys," he said. "I fully expect that there will be other Alico shareholders who have already mentioned joining the cause."

The lawsuit was filed with less than two weeks left in J.D. Alexander's campaign to be re-elected to his state Senate seat. Troutman wasn't opposed for re-election to his House seat. Both men are Republicans.

Troutman and Alexander have been locked in a struggle over the future of the family's massive land holdings. Troutman wants to keep much of the land in agricultural use, while the Alexanders have pushed for more intensive development.

I think I'm with Baxter on this one. If J.D. Alexander had his way there would be no rural Florida left at all. He is one of the people in line to profit greatly when a certain Heartland Parkway goes through.

The Heartland Parkway project was controversial because a Lake Wales Senator, J.D. Alexander, controls companies that own land along the proposed development route. It is estimated that the road would cost between $6.3 billion and $7.8 billion.

3. There was other litigation in 2000....Harris's line was involved then
"Griffin Jr., the Frostproof citrus and land magnate, died in 1990. His successor, Ben Hill Griffin III, couldn't keep the family from splintering.

In 2000, his four sisters and their families filed suit against Griffin III, eventually reaching a settlement that split the holdings."

4. Here's an interesting interview with a grower/activist: says King Ranch (TX) is biggest grower in FL
now, & basically in it for land speculation & other interesting stuff.

BTW, ben hill griffin's dad was born in georgia & evidentally NC origins before that - does anyone know more along those lines?

6. That's a fascinating interview.
I tried to copy paste but it won't let me. The quotes about Polk County not knowing what to do about water management...priceless. That needs a second read. Not sure about Griffin before NC.

I get the sense that they are not surprised that development is gobbling up the citrus industry. Bigger tax base and all that.

5. Schadenfreude
Huge schadenfreude. JD Alexander is the problem. Him and his family who're all for stripping this state bare like fat locusts bent on getting fatter.

7. Turns out that's a lot of land where the Parkway will/may go. Map
And Alexander will profit greatly. He owns some of the land and his clients own a whole lot. Note the diagram up the center of the state.
