By MATT GOURAS Asscoiated Press Writer HELENA, Mont. (AP) A new poll shows that Democrat Barack Obama could be edging ahead of Republican John McCain in Montana.

Obama is at 44 percent and John McCain is at 40 percent in the Montana State University-Billings poll released Thursday. The poll reverses others from earlier in the fall that showed McCain with a lead in the state.

The poll of 403 Montanans was conducted from Thursday though Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Both Obama and McCain did a pretty good job in the poll of holding their party's base, but Obama held an advantage among self-described independents.

1. Holy cow.
This election is in the bag as long as they don't get away with fixing the machines.

2. The Further The Dow Falls, The Better It Looks For Senator Obama
You knew Montana was in play when the GOOP attempted to cage votes there...and failed.

Here's a state where an east coast wave for Obama could turn into a tidal wave. We could see Montana and BOTH Dakotas swing blue (as well as the Omaha Congressional district) if Obama gets an early lead out east...taking Indiana and Virginia. Just like in 1980, as the numbers build up in the East, you could see a lot of GOOPers staying home and this helping out West.

Cheers...
