Bleah... my new co-worker has a Women for McCain button on her backpack.
:wtf:

She started just a few weeks ago, mid-30's, seems like a nice person to me but others have stated that they were put off by her - I'm told that she acts as if she already knows everything and it didn't fly too well. Then I heard that she was going through a divorce which may explain her dismissiveness... Anyway, today noticed the button on her bag and now I'm put off by her... Women for McCain

Should I purposely annoy her?

I can't help myself with that crowd.

Just thought I'd share.

Happy Friday.

9. I have a co-worker
that is buying all the Palin crap. According to her PROUDLY wears her button on her jacket, because Palin shops for diapers at Walmart like she does...

But come to think about it, haven't seen the button since the 150K clothing story broke! uhmmm....I may have to stop by her cube and ask her a "question!" She has also stated that she is living the country if McCain loses. The rest of us are checking out her cube goodies and deciding what we are going to split!

13. a 'Women for McCain' button isn't reason enough to do *anything*
if she talks politics or does something then sure... but otherwise she's entitled to support whoever she wants without being persecuted for it.

21. So she can't talk politics?
Your defense of free speech only extends as far as displaying buttons? Actually talking politics crosses the line and deserves that something be done?

Places of work mirror America -- lot of opinions out there that we have to accept as part of the fabric of our country.

I would estimate my office of 20 to be about equally split. Of course politics are not a big topic of discussion as we usually find more pleasant things to discuss.

29. I wondered about that too
Also I would say that one Republican co-worker is a fairly decent fellow and another co-worker who is a Hillary supporter (presumably Democratic, although he hates Obama, either for race reasons or because Obama beat his Hillary) is a psychotic a$$hole. So I have a hard time seeing the Obama supporters = good; McCain supporters = evil viewpoint.

43. nice ASSU-mption there about my beliefs
the context given was at work
Confronting a workmate about their politics at work is *way* out of bounds.. unless you really know them... and the OP stated he/she didn't.

RW'ers vastly outnumber me at my workplace.
I'm very thankful that it's understood that you don't talk politics with somebody at work unless they broach the subject first.
If one of the fundies started talking to me about how I really need to vote for McCain to save my soul I'd tell them *once* to stop and after that it would be lodged as a harassment complaint.

Maybe at your work it would work out close to even but people proselytizing their political or religious beliefs would be a nightmare where I am.

44. your words, not mine
Sorry if I misunderstood. But you said "if she talks politics" then it would warrant doing something. I thought you meant just talking politics. Nothing wrong with talking politics. If she started bothering you about politics, that's a different matter. I don't know if that counts as harassment. That's pretty strong.

33. above it all? I am in the ring. Writing letters, volunteering, etc.
If the other side jokes about poisoning me, stealing from me, interfering with my livelihood, etc., etc., then I am pretty sure those actions will give me a low opinion of their integrity, principles, and character.

A thread like this on FReeRepublic would cause all kinds of righteous indignation on DU, but apparently double standards are all the rage.

it sounds like she is a person w. problems who doesn't understand appropriate behavior at the office

i don't care if you had a bad divorce that doesn't give you license to bring up politics at the office -- bringing politics into a NEW JOB sounds like a person w. very, very bad judgment who doesn't care what impression she makes -- on the JOB you have to get along with all beliefs

i would keep my distance, my guess is that she won't be there for long -- the ability to work as a team is considered important these days and she doesn't seem to have heard about that

In my cubicle there is a a button feature that painting "The Scream" and says 'Bush again?'. Then, I used to wear a 'George W. Bush - Weapon of Mass Destruction' t-shirt but stopped when it drew the ire of a few of the office freepers.

If the roles were reversed, everyone here would be up in arms and you know it.

There are good people out there who will vote for McCain, and it doesn't make them stupid or evil or racist or anything else.

I'd personally say she's invited discussion by wearing a political pin, but that's not the same as inviting harassment. So congratulations-- you've found someone who is interested in politics, at least on some level, and has invited conversation.

38. Good people will vote for McCain
seems like a huge stretch to me, especially if you're going to also insist that they also aren't stupid.

Republicans exist in only varieties and intensity of three flavors-stupid, evil, or recovering. I've yet to find an exemption, being PC is great and all but it must give way to reality eventually. Voting for McCain is irrational. I've NEVER heard anything resembling a reasoned argument for voting for McCain, in fact McCain has even failed to ever express a case FOR him but rather he lamely attempts to make a case against Obama based on a bunch of nonsense.

One of the nicest guys I know-- he's in the physics department at a well-known university-- very smart guy, very kind hearted, very generous and unassuming... and he's an undecided, leaning towards McCain.

He doesn't pay close attention to politics. You could say he's ignorant, but certainly not stupid.

All I'm saying is you won't do a bit of good by being intentionally confrontational. It might feel good to your ego, it might be an emotional release, but it's not doing anyone else any good. If they're ideologues, there's no amount of reasoning that will convince them. If they're just ignorant, you'll drive them away when you could be engaging them.
