Fox News VP: If McCain Worker 'Mutilation' Story is a Hoax His Campaign is 'Over'
Fox News VP: If McCain Worker 'Mutilation' Story is a Hoax His Campaign is 'Over'

It has drawn wide local and national--even political attention, with some of the candidates for president/vice president weighing in or even calling -- but now the Ashley Todd story may be starting to fall apart. Police in Pittsburgh are relating "inconsistencies" in the story and want the worker for John McCain to take a polygraph, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports this morning.

And now John Moody, executive vice president at Fox News, has commented on his blog that "this incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election. If Ms. Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.

"If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."

He titles his posting: "Moment of Truth." Indeed.

It started yesterday afternoon with Matt Drudge screaming at the top of his site this afternoon in red type -- but no siren -- that a Pittsburgh campaign worker for McCain, age 20, had been viciously attacked and the letter "B" carved into her face, presumably by a Barack Obama fan. Her name, it soon emerged, was Ashley Todd and she had come to Pittsburgh from College Station, Texas, to help out.

New – Police: McCain volunteer changes ATM attack story

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police say a McCain campaign volunteer who reported being held down by a black man who then cut the letter “B” in her face has changed her story.

~snip~
The student, Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, initially said a black man robbed her at knifepoint near a bank Wednesday night and then cut her cheek after seeing a McCain sticker on her car.

Todd, who is white, now says she was knocked unconscious and doesn’t remember being cut in the face. She now says she only discovered the wound later.

No arrests have been made.

4. total horseshit analysis
Nobody in the Obama campaign has done any personal attacks, so only Faux News or AM radio screamers could connect the dots in a way that would blame Obama if the young woman's story is completely true. On the other hand, the action of one deranged supporter should not be a watershed in the campaign of McHoover either, even if her story is completely fabricated.

But, if this woman perpetrated the hoax on her own, how does that reflect on McCain? She's a sick cookie, but that's not his fault.

10. I have to agree- the FOX VP was only sincere about the first part.
If the story had been real, FOX would have reported it 24/7- that is what he really meant.

15. I agree.
If the role was reversed and someone lied about being mugged, beaten, and mutilated for being an Obama supporter, I don't think that should reflect on the Obama campaign.

However, if this is how the cookie crumbles, then hopefully this young woman will learn a lesson in all of this...with the guidance of professional help of course.

22. McCain may not have been in on the hoax, but his campaign was pushing the story
seriously doubt that the McCain campaign was involved in planning this hoax, but I've heard that the campaign was pushing this story to reporters rather aggressively last night, and Fox News and Drudge have been covering it with great enthusiasm (and without much skepticism). Most national news outlets paused, waiting for additional information. It was the right move. No word, as of yet, on contrition from Fox News or Drudge.

In a political context, this sad story won't help the McCain campaign at all, creating another distraction in a state the campaign is desperate to win.

And in a social context, we have yet another high-profile instance of someone blaming an African-American man for a crime that did not occur.

She doesn't have a real black eye. This is a black eye:

Remember http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=98093.0">Justin Zatkoff? He was the the executive director of the Michigan College Republicans who was allegedly beaten after leaving a party in Ann Arbor about a month right the 2006 mid-term elections.

- Black eyes seemed to be a recurring theme with the Repukers.

11. If real she should post a photo of her face today
If it's real she'll still have the black eye looking like it did a day ago, or even two days ago, only there should be some yellowing. The B should have a scab to show that the body is healing it.

So where's the photo of her today?

17. Idiotic on both counts
"If Ms. Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee."

Yes, because if true, clearly Obama must have sent that person out to commit this horrible crime. :sarcasm:

"If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."

The campaign has already engaged in it on a larger scale, but some peon's random actions do not soil the whole campaign.

Talk about overblowing a situation.

I mean, literally. :D Since she was knocked unconscious, then she likely had a concussion.

McLame's losing has nothing to do with this. Just more of FUX's 'guilt by association' bull crap.

20. Exactly!
If she had been knocked hard enough to black out, there would be evidence of that, including defensive wounds.

They used to stick needles in the toes of plague victims to make sure they were dead before they threw them in the pits. Apparently something penetrating the skin tends to rouse the unconscious.

Report: McCain Campaign Volunteer Confesses to Lying About Political Attack

The woman who alleged she was attacked for being a McCain supporter has reportedly fessed up to lying about the story.

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/23/mccain-volunteer-says-mugged-b-carved-face/

Police sources tell KDKA television in Pittsburgh that 20-year-old John McCain campaign volunteer Ashley Todd has admitted to lying to them about being mugged and attacked by a man who carved a "B" into her cheek after seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car. Todd is expected to face charges for the false report, according to KDKA.

32. UPDATED INFO: McCain Communications Director Gave Reporters Incendiary Version Of "Carved B" Story
McCain Communications Director Gave Reporters Incendiary Version Of "Carved B" Story Before Facts Were Known
By Greg Sargent - October 24, 2008, 5:12PM
John McCain's Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established -- and even told reporters outright that the "B" carved into the victim's cheek stood for "Barack," according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a hoax.

The KDKA reporter had called McCain's campaign office for details after seeing the story -- sans details -- teased on Drudge.
