2. I have a real problem with this map. seriously
ALASKA going for McCain?

Hell, on most maps, its right next door to hawaii, so you'd think that it would have rubbed off.

(snark, for those wondering)

Nate Silver is a total data geek, but he knows how to apply it to interesting topics. He proved that with Baseball Prospectus, which projects performance by players and teams, and he's striking out to do the same for election results. Silver's FiveThirtyEight grabs all the polls it can find, weighs them based on methodologies and past accuracy, projects data for regions where it can't find polls, then runs thousands of simulated elections to come up with a likely outcome. Silver's site currently has Obama walking away with it; if nothing else, it'll be interesting to see, come Election Day, how database projections fared with real people.

3. They have several "leaning to Obama" or "Toss-up" that other maps are giving to Obama,
so this is a very conservative estimate.

That's hardly 'leaning', that's solid. And Iowa and Wisconsin are solid Obama too.

5. I'm not buying it
I still don't think PA will go Democrat, and, as a Virginian, I'd love to see my Commonwealth go blue, but I'm skeptical.

I'm just dubious about all the polls and all the projections. It smacks of counting chickens before they're hatched, and that scares the hell out of me.

People lie.

You're not the only one I've heard expressing reluctance to give Obama PA, but I'm kind of curious as to why.

17. I was born and raised there
It's a Southern state, in spite of its geographic location. Populated mainly by descendants of poor immigrants who came over to take lowly jobs and who worked hard all their lives, they had little time, money, or energy to explore anything but their most immediate world.

It's a kind of serf/lord mentality. The people there are suspicious - mighty suspicious - of outsiders and they are racist. Not to say that all are racist, not at all, but there is a streak of bigotry, born of fear and unfamiliarity, that runs through Pennsylvanians. They voted for Hillary Clinton, sure, but that was easy, because, even though it was murder to vote for a woman, at least she was white.

Witness what happened to football legend Lynn Swann when he ran for Governor.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope my ideas are outdated and that the people there are far better and more sophisticated than I think they are, but I truly cannot see my fellow Keystone Staters voting for a black man, simply because they are unwilling, and unable, to believe that a black man could be any better than they are.

28. PA didn't reject Lynn Swann because of his race
We said no to him because of his ideology. He's too conservative for Pennsylvania.

I have news for you, Tangerine. I may not be a native Pennsylvanian, but most I know are blue-collar and very heavily union. They're more likely to vote their jobs and put their racial prejudices aside so they can keep their hard-fought rights. I don't know about you, but those who plan on voting for McLame just because Obama's black is cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

It's true that some parts of Pennsylvania are how you describe; I personally know some people like that. But Philadelphia (and its suburbs), Pittsburgh, and the Poconos are heavily Democratic--the most populous regions of the state.

31. Who ever said racism was rational?
Not I. Union members are just as likely to be racist as non-union members. And with the beating unions have taken since the days of Reagan, I'm not sure that's a reliable measuring stick these days.

I know those regions, having lived there for a long time, and you're making a blanket generalization about a place without fully taking into consideration the subsets within those locales. If you don't think parts of South Philadelphia and NE Philadelphia, as well as the southern suburbs of Pittsburgh are much more complicated than you portray them, you are missing all the shades of gray that exist in that great Commonwealth.

Lynn Swann wasn't too conservative. He was black.

AND..... I DO believe she will vote for Obama! We turned out Allen, and we had the first black governor - Doug Wilder. I believe the polls might not reflect the true divide, but I do believe that our 13 EVs will go to Obama!

41. Virginia's a fooler
We elected Doug Wilder, the first black governor, along with the first gay woman attorney general, and a straight white male lieutenant governor. That's part of why I love this place.

Look, Ralph Stanley has endorsed Obama. That's like having God endorse you in large parts of our Commonwealth.

But, I cannot write off the power of racism. People don't come out and say "I'm not going to vote for a black man." They just don't.

I want to be wrong.

42. I was born and raised in PA also. Your analysis is incorrect. Lynn Swann is no more representative
of a viable black candidate than Alan Keyes was. In fact less so. Swann's main claim to fame is that he was a football player and the Republicans run him for governor? Talk about tokenism!

Pennsylvania is no more Southern than New York is. You can find narrow minded provincialism anywhere, including Europe. And it has little to do with whether people are of immigrant stock or how hard they have had to work. Furthermore most states are populated by "descendents of immigrants who came over to take lowly jobs and had to work hard all their lives." What an inane thing to say. Your analysis is shallow and extremely patronizing at best. And it would not be a stretch to say there is even a bit of bigotry there as well.

45. I'm a bigot, that's right
Thanks for your, I'm certain, unintentionally funny analysis of my opinion. My goodness, but your back sure does go up over the idea of someone thinking differently from you. As a native Keystone Stater, I'm sure you know how highly football players are regarded in the Commonwealth, so calling Swann "a token" is a strange thing to do - were you nodding at the PA black electorate or were you just blabbing?

In any event, thank you for entertaining me.

I wonder why you feel the need to insult me. I think that might not have been necessary.

As for the last four elections, how many black candidates were there? It's not about Democrat or Republican this time around, or haven't you noticed?

Ask Lynn Swann.

When you think of Pennsylvania, you, if you know anything at all about the Commonwealth, must consider its racism.

And, I forgive you for your bad taste. I'm sure you're better than that, and that it was just a lapse.

but you're discounting the white enclaves within those cities, places where the old ways still prevail.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, that's true, but even with vigilance, they can still steal it if they want to. I'm convinced of that.

14. How to work it out to a McCain victory?
He has to hang on to every "leaning Republican" state, run the table on those too close to call right now, and take back some of the states "leaning Democratic." He's pretty much out of money. He doesn't have a ground game in several states (that is, no state election headquarters, no coordination for his voluteers). And the supporters he does have are cracking up.

Work with a good will, my friends. We have 10 more days to finish strong and close the deal on one of the biggest electoral tidal waves in history.

25. from 538.com
...there is now no perceptible rebound for John McCain; in fact, the race may still be trending toward Obama, although the safer assumption is that it's flat. Meanwhile, Obama's electoral position appears as strong as ever. John McCain's chances of winning the election have dwindled to 3.7%, down from 6.5% yesterday.
