WTF? LOCAL REPORTERS got the B-Girl story from DRUDGE then the MCCAIN CAMP?
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 05:02 PM by Junkdrawer
The story of how this Ashley Todd story made it to the National Media is becoming a FASCINATING microcosm of a dysfunctional media:

...

John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a hoax.

The KDKA reporter had called McCain's campaign office for details after seeing the story -- sans details -- teased on Drudge.

....

One assumes that a local story starts with local reporters. In this case, a Drudge teaser leads local reporters to call the McCain campaign and THEN calls to the local police.

The National Media then reports the story as a vetted local news media story.

Ya know, at first I laughed at this being a McCain-dirty-trick-gone-bad. Now, I'm not so sure...

4. The McBush campaign made this a story
From your link:
McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of John Verrilli's reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

I only need to know if Verrilli and KDKA are a right wing station and then the story is even sweeter.

6. Could a mentally disturbed Ashley have been set up?
This from the AP story: "Todd told police that while she did not remember how the backward "B" got on her face, she may have done it herself since she was the only one in the car when she saw it."

I don't know, but I can see her being set up. Supposedly she'd been working for the CR in NYC, but two weeks ago, she ends up in Pittsburg, which is an area were the McCain campaign is playing the race card.

Did she blackout? Was she drugged? Is that why she didn't have her story straight? Was a very excited mentally disturbed young woman targeted to play this role? If so, by whom? Was it the CR or does it go to the Pennsylvania McCain campaign itself?

7. I wonder how long this had been on national TV before the
first request for the police report. Hours? Days?

that the McCain Campaign man inflamed and spread this story.

9. I posted this earlier today in a thread that died.
The proteges that Kkkarl Rove turned out must not have paid attention in class

I just keep thinking that these college republicans he turned loose this election cycle just don't work on the same level as him. I would have expected you to be a better teacher KKkarl. I really hope you've gotten a good share of the pie for yourself, because your pool of idiots won't be making any political names for themselves anytime soon.

15. The thing you need to remember about Karl Rove - the source to his claim of genius are RNC faxes
written by, wait for it, Karl Rove. This sad young lady could very well have simply been following orders from the genius himself. If only he'd been smart enough to warn her about the mirror effect, they might have made this work.

Then again, he'd probably have hired someone to actually bash her face and cut it. Not because he's that smart and saw the obvious pitfalls of having her do it all herself despite the deniability advantage, simply because he's that vicious and would want to take advantage of any excuse to have someone beat up. IMO.

but I do think their tone may have encouraged her given her mental health issues?

13. Another odd point: Once the story went national Big Time, Fox News....
was one of the first to back away from the story.

I think this was a local College Republican scam that went national when it wasn't supposed to. Once that happened and pressure was put on local police to thoroughly investigate the story, Fox and other connected Republicans ran away as far and as fast as they could.

16. Well, it looks like Ashley's going to be on ice until after the election...:
...

We don't feel she should be able to walk out onto the street," said Pittsburgh Assistant Police Chief Maurita Bryant. "We wouldn't want any further harm to come to her."

Ms. Todd was in the Allegheny County Jail last night on $50,000 bond after her video arraignment before District Judge John N. Bova. Judge Bova requested that she undergo an evaluation by the jail's behavior clinic. She'll return to court on Thursday.

The day after the purported attack, both Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin called Ms. Todd, offering words of comfort. Yesterday, McCain-Palin campaign spokesman Peter Feldman issued a statement: "This is a sad situation. We hope she gets the help she needs."
