Please let's not kid ourselves about the B girl
In the culture that is the young RNC operative types the more outrageous, the more you can prove you are willing to give all to "the cause" the quicker you move up. Especially now that it is all about to fall apart and in the ensuing chaos and blooletting the proven will be the new power brokers.

All you have to do is look back at Rove's legacy. This is legend and lore in their world. From the stealing of letterhead and envelopes to invite drunks to a Dem fundraiser, to the battery powered listening device HE found in his office, to putting two guys behind bars for making two phone calls, to the whisper campaign against Judge Kennedy that he was a pedophile, and so on....this is part of the required reading for young ops in the RNC infrastructure. Machiavelli, Clausawitz, Sun-Tzu, and the story of Rove. It is dogma to them.

I hope she was just tired. She claims (and Pittsburgh police agree) to have had past mental problems that may well be (and I do wish her the best) but ideas like that don't just come out of thin air.

Not just to support my point but see this

13. I forgot to include a mention of Allen Raymond
I am reading his book "How to Rig and Election" and he doesn't say that it is all Rove driven (he does have one short interaction with Karl) but that that is the business of political operatives (both sides surely) only on their side the WIN is the end that justifies all means. It is cultural.

great read so far

Rule 1-everyone you meet is a contact
Rule 2-find out how much money they have for your candidate
Rule 2-Rule 2 trumps Rule 1 or contacts are meaningless

I got it from the library.

mainly through a whisper campaign about how great he was and that is had pretty much been decided.
Stuff of legends.

Abramoff and Reid were his cohorts at the time. The message to the new young Repubs is clear. WIN and all else will be taken care of.

a raciest flame baiter that deserves about as much empathy as someone that shoots a bull from the sky. BUT it is a different time and we are all going to be held to it. Thank God. Maybe we are finally evolving? I find it so hard to believe we have not evolved further by now. It's really disheartening!

20. Goodling is a perfect example
thanks for adding that.

Qualifications mean nothing. Facts mean nothing. LOYALTY reigns (as in Suskind's book with O'Neill) and once you are proven to be loyal they know you will do anything for the cause...and if caught you will be covered. Judith Miller had not proven herself as such so they cast her out to sea-well they are bringing her back on Fox News, they must have seen that she is loyal now.

the deal from Regnery may already be in the offing

Ingraham learned what it is like to defy the party and show even a hint of non-loyalty. She suggested back in the 90's that maybe everyone should back off the Clintons a bit....she was immediately no longer invited to Grover Norquist's Wednesday morning strategy/talking points meeting. She re-proved herself and has been brought back into the fold.

30. Another point that I failed to include in the original post
You couldn't be more right.

It is groupthink and worship of the top of the food chain. It has a LOT to do with the bust on Wall Street.

Any of the documentaries on Enron have this as a pillar of the downfall. I can tell you that the first thing I heard in general business courses in college (I have an accounting degree) was the awesome possibilities that Wall Street and IPO's offer as well as the personal stories of how great these magnificient INDIVIDUALS are. I know someone who works for a Fortune 500 company (you know the name like you do the Post Office ;-) ) and every meeting BEGINS with quotes from the dead founder of the company. It is required in the template of presentations.

Great point Snark

You know, I don't use words llke Nazi or Fascist much. I think they get thrown around with a little too much abandon. That being said, that's what this reminds me of. Bunch of Hitler Youth goose-marching around, encouraging and competing with each other to see who can burn more books and finger more "enemies of the state."

Scary stuff.

38. mccain-goper response... crickets?
the lack of any sort of statement from mccain or GOPers since it was revealed Todd's attack was nothing more than a stunt speaks volumes.

when the story of the "attack" broke - they were quick to capitalize on it:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/mccain_aide_gave_reporters_inc.php

John McCain's Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established -- and even told reporters outright that the "B" carved into the victim's cheek stood for "Barack," according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a
hoax.

Where's their response now?

ok - put on the :tinfoilhat: - is the mccain campaign involved in concocting the story in the first place? Was todd really acting on her own?

is this another example of mccain doing anything and everything to win?

40. I was floored by the notion she could only have done such a thing due to being "troubled."
She didn't come up with this stunt out of the blue, she followed an existing template. One that unfortunately works on liberals who will still want to somehow explain/excuse her behavior even after finding out she staged the whole thing.

The pretense of "I don't remember" scratching the B on her cheek is the oldest criminal cliche in existence. There are countless cases where the initial denials of committing a crime, change into "I don't remember" once sufficient evidence comes to light making deniability impossible.

She knew what she was doing. It doesn't matter if some examination reveals her to have "issues." We all have "issues."

She is a criminal, who deliberately set out to perpertrate a hate crime in the service of typically fucked up rightwing political strategy. If she'd been more clever about the execution of her crime there is no way she would ever have admitted to faking her own injuries. She and her spiritual ancestors in the Republican party don't observe a moral code that any of us would recognize. And she gets none of my pity.
