Sarah Palin, Ignoramus
via AlterNet's PEEK:

Sarah Palin, Ignoramus
Posted by PZ Myers, Pharyngula on October 25, 2008 at 3:31 PM.

This is too much. Sarah Palin gave a policy speech today in which she claimed that she wanted more support for children with disabilities, more tools to test for disorders, and while also decrying the expense of scientific research.

Where does a lot of that earmark money end up anyway? (…) You've heard about some of these pet projects they really don't make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.

I am appalled.

This idiot woman, this blind, shortsighted ignoramus, this pretentious clod, mocks basic research and the international research community. You damn well better believe that there is research going on in animal models — what does she expect, that scientists should mutagenize human mothers and chop up baby brains for this work? — and countries like France and Germany and England and Canada and China and India and others are all respected participants in these efforts.

Yes, scientists work on fruit flies. Some of the most powerful tools in genetics and molecular biology are available in fruit flies, and these are animals that are particularly amenable to experimentation. Molecular genetics has revealed that humans share key molecules, the basic developmental toolkit, with all other animals, thanks to our shared evolutionary heritage (something else the wackaloon from Wasilla denies), and that we can use these other organisms to probe the fundamental mechanisms that underlie core processes in the formation of the nervous system — precisely the phenomena Palin claims are so important.

This is where the Republican party has ended up: supporting an ignorant buffoon who believes in the End Times and speaking in tongues while deriding some of the best and most successful strategies for scientific research. In this next election, we've got to choose between the 21st century rationalism and Dark Age inanity. It ought to be an easy choice.

2. Anybody remember Gregor Mendel???
I seem to recall from my high school and undergrad Biology classes a man named Gregor Mendel who studied fruit flies. Isn't his work, like, pretty important to the study of genetics?

Yet another fine example of why it's important to think before you speak.

3. I remember him studying peas, not fruit flies, but it's possible he did
and our texts didn't mention it. His studies though were the foundation of genetics studies though even with the lowly pea.

6. Yes, Peas!!!
You're right, he did use peas in his hallmark experiments. I believe fruit flies are used frequently in modern genetic experiemnts due to their rapid reproductive rate.

Just for kicks, let's say Palin was bitching about a million bucks for the study of peas. She could have put Gregor the geneticist out of business.

4. Ignorance is nothing to be proud of.
How did education come to be seen as "inauthentic"? Didn't it used to be a source of PRIDE that a family stressed learning when they got to these shores?

to realize just how big a twit she is. But yes you're right, she's an ignoramus.

7. And her speech writer and researchers too
Let's face it, she doesn't write her own stuff, and probably more than one person works on producing her speeches - especially when it's listing things she can slag off. But they all either thought "it mentions France - of course we've got to use it as something 'bad'", or they have all forgotten what they learnt in biology about genetics research.

13. This reminds me of McCains outrage
Over Obama giving funding to GASP! a planetarium. Neither of these two get science at ALL. I think someone heard "fruit fly" and thought that must be useless research. I doubt anyone in that camp HAD a biology course. All the biology you need is in the bible after all...:sarcasm:

14. Does She?
Last I heard, no one could/would produce any evidence of her completed required course work to get a degree.
