Sunday sermon - Romans 13
With the looming possibility of the election of Barack Obama I think we should remind our brothers and sisters of the Christian to look to the scriptures for enlightenment. I believe special attention should be payed to Romans chapter 13. For those of you not familiar the scripture follows:

1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Further our fellow citizens should pay special attention to this verse.

10Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

I sincerely hope those who are even now spewing words of hatred and division can take this to heart. My fellow DUers, Christian or no can I please get an Amen!

2. I guess my point was a little too subtle...
I am using Romans 13 as an example of the contradictions that believers - especially right wingers - must face. Since they have a literal interpretation of the bible I would hope that they would review this piece in light of their impending defeat. Personally, I really don't believe that you should automatically submit to any authority. I do believe that you should be a good citizen. I believe you should work for the benefit of your fellow citizens and humanity as a whole. I personally don't really believe that government authority is of god. Since I am agnostic that would be hard to do. However it would be nice to have this little bit to toss in the face of any fundie who doesn't want to pay taxes, spew ten different colors of hatred, and make the claim that an Obama presidency is somehow illegitimate.

3. "The authorities that exist have been established by God"
Somebody really must have pissed him off?

or is that what they want you to think?
