Can someone explain what the appeal of Drudge is, to RWers or anyone else?
The few times I've gone there, it's just a lame looking site that collects links from other sites and presents them in a snarky way.

His radio show (does it still exist?) is the worst, least entertaining thing ever, and he's got an unpleasant nasally voice.

Aside from having rumor contact, the guy doesn't have any actual reporters or news gathering apparatus that I'm aware of, right?

As far as I'm aware, Drudge has had exactly ONE important scoop, the Lewinsky thing, that essentially made his career. He's certainly had plenty of misses that don't seem to damage his business, like the Kerry affair nonstory or this Black Zorro girl in Pittsburgh. Because his audience seems to treat his site like a RW Enquirer, he doesn't seem to suffer from pimping inaccurate stories like this. Credibility doesn't seem to be an issue for him.

Do I have all this right? What's the big deal with this loser?

2. It's a tabloid.
It's popular for the same reasons as any other tabloid.

3. Convenience. I've read his web site for years,
although I've been annoyed by the recent McCain PR feed he's been running. But he collects 10-20 links that represent daily news I'm interested in. I don't get my worldview from him; I just calibrate his political slant when I look at the stories he selects.

Lately, his web site has been annoying, though.

4. To get the complete picture, read Drudge's Wikipedia entry.
Then the utter lack of competency for anything is clear - another Emperor with no clothes that republicans love to adore.

5. Even a broken clock is right twice a day . . .
In Drudge's case, he scored with the Lewinsky caper.

It looks like some moved the hands on the clock several times after that, so he wasn't right again twelve hours later, as expected.

6. It's his Walter Winchell hat that reminds them of 1930s-style muckrakers!

7. Sludge is definitely their "go-to" place to get their propaganda...
reinforced. My co-workers are mostly hopeless dittoheads, and routinely get their fix of Rush, Hannity and Savage, which all use Sludge to give an "air of credibility" to what they are saying. There's just no talking with them about anything vaguely related to politics or social issues. Pretty sad, really. As I've said here before, this isn't the spirit upon which the nation was founded. The Enlightenment was about a progressive vision...wisdom gleaned from a wide, virtually endless range of sources...not one single message rubber-stamped over and over.

10. Anyone who uses Drudge as a source for something posted here on DU
is suspect as far as I'm concerned.
