U S Special Forces Launch Rare Attack Inside Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria – U.S. military helicopters launched an extremely rare attack Sunday on Syrian territory close to the border with Iraq, killing eight people in a strike the government in Damascus condemned as "serious aggression."

A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq. The Americans have been unable to shut the network down in the area because Syria was out of the military's reach.

"We are taking matters into our own hands," the official told The Associated Press in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.

1. I can't say that I am against all cross-border raids.
If in fact the enemy is running across the border, attacking and then running back to safety, and the safe-haven gov't isn't cooperating I think it may be best to take them out.

I'm not saying we are right in this situation, because who knows what the details/extenuating circumstances are. This is big news.

4. I can't help but think that if we were not involved in a Civil War...

..we wouldn't have that problem. We don't belong in Iraq in the first place. I say bring our troops home now and invest that $10 Billion a month in America. Oh.. I forgot... the American Military is needed as security guards for the oil pipelines.

10. If the REPUBLICONs hadn't ruined our credibility it might be okay.
That was before the Iraq war-for-profit based on lies. REPUBLICONs have violated too many treaties, conventions, and laws for this to be okay at all. We will very likely pay a huge price now. Maybe not from the Syrians directly either.

Linked...not even proven. That's nothing more than telling Syria that we are going to invade them now. FUCK...pulling in Syria, will provoke about a dozen other ME countries into this failed fray. This is an even bigger fuckup than than the original invasion. Today, Syria, who can't do much retaliation. Tomorrow, Iran, who CAN. Expect a quick escalation. Don't be surprised by what follows.

Don't worry though go shopping, everything's fine. Hey the amazing race is coming on...

3. I guess the Pentagon is now our diplomatic corps.
They're crossing into Pakistan and, now, Syria to "protect" us.

5. A very concise insight into the putative War on Terror given by Stella
Rimington, former head of MI5, in an interview by Steven Bowron, in the Scottish newspaper, the Sunday Post. She comes across in the interview as a very astute person (as you would expect), but also rather sympathetic.

This was her comment on the War on Terror:
"'The War on Terror is a mistaken concept since it gives the impression that terrorism can be fought by force of arms.

But it's much more complex than that', she says.

'It has to be tackled by political moves, by diplomacy and by improving conditions in various parts of the world. The War on Terror has confused the issue and made it worse.'"

Ah, but McCain and the Neocons are the great guardians of your security, aren't they?

7. First of all, if our Government did just do this...
...do you realize that McCain just lost the election? Our military is stretched way too thin as it is. This is TERRIFYING. Congress needs to something about this right now. This is not OK.
There will probably be a nice terrorist attack here next.
Goddammit.
