This would be an incredible upset. We have been working sooo hard, and we're so hopeful because it's about time a Democrat gets in.

GOP stronghold has a struggle on its hands in McClintock vs. Brown

Northern California's 4th Congressional District ordinarily wouldn't be anything other than an easy vote generator for Republicans in one of the stoutest GOP regions in the state.

But in this anything-but-ordinary political year, the stretch run of the race between Republican Tom McClintock, a renowned conservative lion, and Democrat Charlie Brown, a decorated Air Force veteran, is emerging as one of the country's most closely watched congressional contests.

The national Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is taking aim at the sprawling district – extending from the Sacramento suburbs to the Oregon border – as a prime target in its national "Red to Blue" strategy to turn Republican seats Democratic. And the Republican National Congressional Committee is running ads to defend its turf.

So McClintock, a state lawmaker from Thousand Oaks, fires up supporters to work voter precincts in Placer County by warning about the dire consequences of "both an Obama presidency and a Pelosi Congress."

"This election in the 4th District may decide whether we will return to our traditional founding freedoms or whether the nation will move to European socialism," he declares. :eyes:

Brown, a district resident from Roseville, stirs an outdoor gathering under the ponderosa pines of Nevada County for a campaign "to open up this district so that good people can run for office no matter what political party they're from."

He tells supporters he can win in a district where Republicans hold a 17 percentage-point voter registration advantage. He implores them not to take "anything for granted" and warns that he expects to be targeted by a blitz of last-minute GOP mailers.

In this district where a powerful Republican incumbent, Rep. John Doolittle, routinely won re-election by 20 points or more, few are taking anything for granted. Two years after Doolittle narrowly defeated Brown, 49 percent to 46 percent, the congressman is now retiring amid a long-running FBI investigation into his ties to disgraced Washington, D.C., lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

1. We are about to have a Democratic senator
for the first time since 1980 when Mike Gravel left the Senate. :)

2. Republicans are going nuts here in Upstate New York. For years and
years, the Assembly and State Senate Districts were gerrymandered so that we've had Democrats running the lower house and Republicans running the upper house. Effectively, 3 men ran New York; the Governor, the Senate Majority Leader and the Assembly Majority Leader. I think the Republicans are within 2 seats of losing their hold over the State Senate.

One possible change: the Republicans have made an art out of pitting the intersts of small city/rural Upstate vs those of New York City.

3. Gordon Smith is in BIG trouble in Oregon
And I don't think anyone honestly saw that coming even as little as six months ago; lots of folks thought Merkley had a chance, but actual victory seemed out of reach. Smith's election-year "moderate" schtick seems to have finally worn thin with the voters.

7. I reckoned Smith would be done if:
Merkley go the nod; and

He had the money.

Demographics in the state haven't been trending well for Republicans, and Smith not only had too many ties to Bush, but supported turning social security- which wouldn't go over well after the collapse of Bear Stearns.

12. I think Smith's support has been slowly eroding for years.
I know a life-long Republican who can't wait to see him go. This is because he was a helicopter pilot and he was teaching people to fly helicopters. Many of the students were able to pay thanks to GI Bill / VA benefits. Smith apparently voted to stop those benefits from being used that way and effectively put this guy out of business.

Thank God so many Oregonians are seeing through all the attack ads and supporting Merkley.

4. Actually, when I was canvassing for Brown
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 01:25 PM by dubeskin
I was surprised at the large amount of Republicans defecting over to him. It's a great feeling to see an elderly Republican voting for a Democratic candidate. All it takes is a few minutes to convince them.

Whenever I was in the campain office, there was a strong feeling that he was going to win. It's definitely going to be tight if he does, because the competition is so big. But I definitely think if the more urban areas like Auburn, Roseville, and Rocklin show out, Brown can win it, which will be lovely.

On edit: Although, the main trouble comes in though is that Brown is somewhat of a conservative Democrat. While and Democrat is a good one (with the exception of a few) I think that it could pose somewhat of a problem on the issues. For example, Brown describes himself as a fiscal conservative. In fact, he was a former Republican. Just because we'll extend our majority, doesn't necessarily mean though that all the Congressional Dems will support the same policies.

8. Yea, the key will be the areas where we live....The eastern
counties will remain just as backwards for the most part.

It just gets me why anyone would want to reward the GOP by electing another Republic to go to Washington and do absolutely nothing for this region .. since Do-Little took his job for granted for so many years and did zero to help anyone.

I feel it will be close, but I'm cautiously optimistic we can beat that ridiculously horrible McClintock.

11. What's funny though is that even I try to drill the "Former Republican"
label, most people are like "I'm a Republican, so I HAVE to vote for McClintock." I'm not quite sure if they want to though, which is why I try to tell them the positives of him. I think the issue is going to be convincing people they don't ALWAYS have to vote along party lines.

Granted, I really don't have a huge vested interest in the District election, because I'll be going to UC Davis next year anyway. But I'd still love to see Brown take the district, turn it blue, but also contribute to the majority.

10. I know! WTF is up with the Bee?
Well I talked to my parents who live in Fair Oaks, and my mom and dad said they voted early for Durston.

So, there's at least two in the books for our side!! :bounce:

6. That contest REEKS of 'party first' and constituents last.
It's the GOP power brokers finding a 'nest' for one of their "made men" ... importing a Thousand Oak party soldier into a culturally distinct region of California. It's the kind of disgusting partisan political maneuvering that affirms my anti-partisan independent stance.

9. Oh absolutely, which is why we're hoping these strikingly
ridiculous Republics who live around here will refuse to hire a carpetbagger who will clearly do nothing to help this region.

Why would he care not even being from around here?

The correct answer is, he doesn't care about Northern California. He just wants to go to Washington and behave corruptly like his predecessor who will hopefully be going to prison.
