"I don't like Obama either"
"Personally, he does nothing for me. He seems like an egomaniac and a typical politician.

However, I don't have to like the guy to vote for him. I'm not voting for the guy I'd most like to "have a beer with". I'm voting for the person who will install the best people in government, who will implement policies that I agree with, who will work to repair international relations, who will protect all of our rights, and who will be able to get things done."

The above was my response to a group of football fans tailgating for the Florida-Georgia game this weekend when someone said "I just don't like the guy".

Just my little weekend rant and it seemed to make a few folks think and agree with me.

5. You may want to clarify that the above is NOT your real feelings...
...unless they are, in which case...

11. I don't put any politician on a pedestal.
I don't really think I would like Obama as a person. It's just that liking a person is irrelevant to voting for them.

2. I've been campaigning against McCain since day one.
I rarely mention Obama's name, if ever. Nothing against the guy, I'm just out to defeat the Republican party.

9. Exactly.
I don't agree with the republicans, and I will work to see goals that I agree with implemented.

I don't understand this "I have to like the guy personally to vote for him" attitude.

6. Kudos for allowing your intellect to over-ride your emotions.
Although I have the greatest respect for Hillary Clinton, her life story and personality has always rubbed me the wrong way. However, I'll admit that if she won the Primary, I would not be a PUMA, but vote for her.

This election is just too important for our Nation and future generations to allow personality conflicts to alter a "smart" choice of a future leader.

Kudos to you - if the situation were different, I want to believe that I would do the RIGHT thing also. :patriot: :hi:

13. My motivation was to try and get a few others to use their intellect too.
These guys had nothing against his policies, but they just didn't like him nor his more enthusiastic followers.

I just wanted to be honest with them and admit I didn't "like" Obama either, but it wasn't stopping me from voting for him.

7. You don't have to be in love with the candidate to vote for him.
 Your vote will count just as much as everyone elses.

8. So is that your little way of getting around the no-tearing-down-of-the-nominee rule?
:eyes:

"He seems like an egomaniac." -- Well, I'll take his message that WE are the power over other politicians who always speak about "me, me, me."

Typical politician? When was the last time we had a politician like this? I'll tell you when ... NEVER.

10. No, it's just not understand the "I vote for the guy I most want to have a beer with attitude"
My point was, you don't HAVE to like the guy to vote for him. Vote for the person who will do what you agree with, even if you don't like the guy personally.

12. I like him and, I'm amazed by him.He is steadily on our side.
He is the constant Democracy wonk. I viewed him speaking and settling disputes for over 17 years and he is just who we need now. He is someone who works with the most powerful and comes out the winner and he is fighting for us, with us, and through us. The true Democrat!

I get that the side approach to asserting his position works and I have used it almost like you, but I did not say I didn't like him, because I do. He is someone I would love to share a drink with.

There are many people (like myself) who don't really like him as person, it's just irrelevant whether I like him or not.

I wanted to be up front that to these people who didn't like him, that I didn't either. However, that would not stop me from voting for him.

16. I had that with Al Gore and John Kerry both so I understand totally
They just rubbed me the wrong way on a personality level and I couldn't really put my finger on what it was for either. I just simply didn't like them. But I voted for both with no reservations whatsoever because they were clearly the best choice for this country. I actually like Obama as well as believe he's best the country so I'm lucky this time. But I've had many a conversation such as yours - whatever works IMHO.

19. What politician isn't an egomanic?
To quote Douglas Adams:
"It is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it... anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job."

20. I can think of one off of the top of my head, Barack Obama.
There may be a couple of egomaniacs on the ticket this election but since John McCain and Sarah Palin will be out of the spotlight come shortly, I thankfully won't have to witness it as often anymore.
