anybody who is aware of Cali politics realizes something happened here

I'm ASTONISHED!!! My old hometown county - Butte County - is the big blue one amid the sea of red in the north center of the state. I'm so proud of them - they NEVER vote blue!

9. Look at the Southern tier of Counties - these were (R) last two elections, save LA,

Up the middle of the state - the Highway 99 corridor through the great San Joaquin Valley is usually a solid (R) mainstay. A couple of counties flipped and Fresno, of all places, just eeked out a majority for McCain.

I had hoped to see Orange County go blue - it's that red one on the south coast of CA - but not this year.

I have conservative family there, and it's like Oklahoma (where I know live) with a kick ass beach. When I lived in L.A. the Orange Curtain was always the big joke.

14. It is a different world down there, something happens when you cross that county line.
Drivers become more aggressive, IQ drops, and social considerations evaporate.

20. Well, to be fair, several cities in OC went for Obama this time: Irvine, Costa Mesa,Santa Ana,Tustin

It sucks living here as a Dem, but it is slowly getting better. Most of these cities, besides SA and Laguna, went for Bush in 2004.

Orange County?

There was that MTV show that portrayed it Beverly Hills by the Sea. But I went through there in August and saw more Obama signs than McCain signs (actually I didn't see any McCain signs, but his was in mid-August).

It gave me the feeling that Laguna Beach might be a blue enclave, relatively speaking, in O.C.

7. Yep. Some great gains.
San Bernadino, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Merced, San Joaquin Counties went for Obama, as did my own SLO County. These all went to Bush last two elections.

And Fresno Co. was lost by only a handful of votes - 94,788 Obama - 94,814 McCain.

10. Someone told me today about Stanislaus county.
Apparently this is the first time the county has gone Democratic in the presidential race since the 1970's. It was a razor thin majority, but a majority nonetheless.

This has nothing to do with young voters or new Democrats either. Stanislaus, Merced, and San Joaquin counties have been ground zero for the real estate implosion (at one point the three counties were top three in the nation for forclosures) and the people here are furious at the powers that be. People were raging that the $700 billion rescue plan bailed out Wall Street but did nothing to help homeowners in trouble. This is a manifestation of that rage.

23. I wouldn't say this has "nothing" to with factors besides the ...
real estate implosion.

While I'm sure the anger of troubled homeowners accounts for a large part of the blue trend, I believe the outflow of liberal and moderate voters out of the Bay Area into the valley as well as the political maturation of the Hispanic population have something to do with it. It's not "nothing."

... and we're on our way to the reality-detached community. Sprinkle with Knott's Berry Farm, Saddleback Church, and Calvary Chapel and pave over part of it and call it John Wayne Airport and we're there.

Orange County was the power center of the land and water (and rail) robber barons of the early 20th century. You didn't dare fart in Orange County without a license from the barons. The cherry on top, Yorba Linda, birthplace of Richard Nixon, is in Orange County.

21. Well, I live in OC and there are more and more Dems here than 4 yrs ago for sure.
Irvine went for Obama, as well as Laguna Beach, Tustin, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, and I think Brea. The rest of the place went for McLame.

But you are right - some very selfish people live here. Drives me nuts, but my husband owns a small company here, so we won't be leaving.
