Suddenly, it may be cool to be an American again
Source: AP

Overnight, Americans did something their harshest critics in Europe have yet to do: elect a person of color as head of state and commander in chief. That gives U.S. citizens some bragging rights, even if a lot of us would just as soon eschew hubris and embrace humility.

I'm a marathon runner, and I have a red, white and blue singlet that I've seldom dared to wear on the Continent. Marathons are difficult enough without enduring catcalls and jeers from spectators.

But my best friend and training partner — who is French — just gave me his stamp of approval.

"Will you wear your Stars and Stripes shirt now? You're allowed!" he told me.

1. I can't wait to travel overseas again. Seems like Russia is still
not very happy with us but I would probably go to Australia or Germany. :dem:

3. Agreed
It's tough to write this, but it's been very difficult for me to even look at our flag these past eight years without feeling pretty ashamed and negative. It's sad but the stars and stripes have been misused, misrepresented, and manipulated; they've become a symbol of oppression and aggression the world over. I think it will be very freeing having the flag back again. Today I looked at the image and felt relief. That sums it up; relief. I'm so glad other nations still care about us. The messages sent to the New York Times early this morning from international readers who love our country were tear inspiring.

It's a good day to be an American again. Now to repair the damage.

4. For me, it hasn't felt "cool" to be American
since Kennedy. I'm not saying I haven't felt any pride. But cool is something else. It implies youth and sophistication and being on the cutting edge. It's been a long, long time since America has that image, but it is back. When the French are putting our president's face on clothing, that says it all!

10. I'm leaving for the middle east tomorrow.
I'm really curious how I'll be greeted there. During a trip to Turkey last year, a cab driver really let me have it because we let Bush get elected twice.
