Message to Congress and President-Elect Obama: Don't be afraid to be a little Liberal

It feels like a long time since we've had all Congress and the White House, and it has.

But you don't have to be 100% cautious by staying in the middle.

Don't listen to the media, don't listen to the pundits, and definitely don't listen to the Right.

This country as a whole can not be said to be left or right, but a blend of ideologies.

What we are missing are policies and laws that reflect that.

Take baby steps first, but you don't have to stay centrist.

Here is what you can do:
Environmental protections
Bring back regulations
Roll back excessive executive power
Wrap up the war in Iraq
Protections for workers
Social programs which we will need for this unstable economy

1. President Obama will govern from the Center
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 11:38 AM by ...of J.Temperance
Just like President Clinton did, on social issues, such as abortion, gay rights, stem cell research etc, he will be liberal....but in general he will govern as a Centrist.

Which is what people want, the mainstream are in the Center....they are neither Left nor Right, but smack in the middle.

I should add that President Obama was elected by a VAST majority of people, that includes a HUGE number of Centrists and Independents.

He will govern for ALL, he WASN'T just elected by the so-called "Progressives", and I would hope that if he doesn't do a MASSIVE swing to the Left (which would be a HUGE mistake, and I don't think he will because he ran on a Centrist platform), I hope the "Progressives" don't cause trouble for him like they did for President Clinton.

The majority of people are Center-Left....the majority of people aren't Left-Wing....even Nancy Pelosi has come to realise this, she is urging President Obama to govern as a Centrist, and she's right.

On Edit: Added comment

2. Unfortunately, we will see an administration similar to the Clinton one with the DLC/DINO wing
of center-right corporate operatives running the show.

Yep - better than McBush III but not liberal or progressive by any measure.

4. Not unfortunately, but FORTUNATELY
President Obama will be very similar to President Clinton, Centrist and moderately liberal, which is what the majority of people want and voted for.

Progressive politics are not shared by the majority of Democrats, if the majority of Democrats shared Progressive politics then Dennis Kucinich with Bernie Sanders as Veep would have got the nomination in 2004....and lost in a landslide.

President Obama won in a landslide because he projected an image of moderation and Centrism....and I think he's going to be a brilliant President.

3. Important
I think it is important that President Obama and Congress realize that the people will probably be willing to give them a little slack but they need to use it wisely. There has to be some Liberal/Progressive positions that are actually approved by a vast majority of the electorate so do some of those first. They should be easy to pass, most people will approve of them and they will show that at least in a small way the executive and congress can work together and get something done.
