A shot across the bow Letter to the Editor (FL Amendment 2)
I realize the same thing has been done to gays and lesbians in other states, but as this is a local publication it was all I could do to condense my true thoughts into less than 250 words. I have no idea if they will print it or not, but consider it submitted.

-------------------------------------------------------

On November 5, we learned over six out of ten voters in our county and state do not share a founding principle of our nation—all persons are created equal deserving equal protection under the law. Too many voters opted to legally violate their fellow citizens’ human and civil rights.

Amendment 2 doesn’t protect marriage, it allows a religious group to legally impose their beliefs on all. The Rev. Tom Messer of Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville told his fellow pastors, “We have a pulpit a captive audience. You have an opportunity to influence them.” This controlling attitude offends my calling as a minister.

This group chooses hate contrary to clear evidence sexual orientation is biological rather than a lifestyle. They must ignore divine gifts of reason and science to rectify a theological conflict.

If God is perfectly good, homosexuals are equally worthy of love and respect. Good people are being indoctrinated into false beliefs about sexuality that deny homosexuals their humanity—a dangerous and evil perspective.

Legal same gender marriage still allows clergy to decline to officiate and recognize such unions. Meanwhile, more tolerant and enlightened clergy continue to be prohibited from legally solemnizing the union two loving adults wish to ritualize and declare publicly before their family and friends.

Same gender marriage harms children, but denying human dignity does not? Bless our children who mature into good and loving homosexual adults. This constitutional amendment tells them their society rejects their true Selves. That is real harm.

4. Thanks. Still, it doesn't feel like nearly enough.
Too little too late although I was involved in trying to defeat Amendment 2 from the outset.

3. That definitely chafes. How can something be even permitted on the ballot?
Personally, I think a judicial review of admendments prior to placement on the ballot is not out of order. Tyranny of the majority should be protected against at the very least.
