Prop 8 - Fuck why and find out how
How to overturn it

How to stop tyranny of the majority

The source is not as important as its reversal at this point

We must, with all our energy, defeat this crap

This coming from an Atheist who believes that religion is the root of the problem. Who knows? Religion might also be the root of the solution?

I just want 8 reversed.

And this is coming from a Suburban Straight Male.

One who is sick of seeing this kind of shit pass from ignorant fascists.

1. Agreed - we're not going to get to the HOW until we can stop pointing fingers
and bickering about "WHO". Recommended - let's start talking about solutions. :)

2. I think we need to make our case better
I know, it's supposed to be apparent---equal rights for all. But that didn't work. We need to talk about why marriage and not just civil unions and the difference between a civil marriage and a marriage as the religions understand it. Some people will never be won over and, I suspect, use religion as the excuse to ban gay marriage, but some people are open to a change of mind and heart.

3. It's all about persistence
Persistence is the only thing that has ever paid off in civil rights struggles. Whether it be India - South in the USA - Apartheid in South Africa - it all comes to persistence.

4. There was another thread, that asked for "alternative language."
Here is the link to the OP (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4389779&mesg_id=4389779)

And here is my suggestion:
"Constitutional visibility/invisibility?"

One of the concerns gay people have is that the words "gay, lesbian, transgender, (etc.)" do not appear in any of the legislation providing protections against discrimination. Hence, resigning them to a status of invisibility. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4389779&mesg_id=4398132)

I think we need to start with a new way of looking at which citizens are rendered invisible to the laws based on their exclusion from them.

It just needs to be made equitable now, people will adjust.

7. We just have to kill it
Prop 8 is an abomination

Whoever gave it that description hit the nail on the head

It can be killed in the courts, but I honestly think this needs to be taken to those responsible

The protests at the Mormon Compounds are what needs to happen on a daily basis

Then they might just figure out - just maybe - that they are not the only people on this planet

8. That's why I've been trying to get people to consider my language suggestion.

For the Mormans and their bigoted brethren those "other people" are invisible.

And they'd love to keep it that way.

9. I know it took some time for me to "get it" also, so I agree
education is needed. In my case, it's because I never thought of marriage as anything but a religious ceremony - and as an aethist, it didn't seem to be "my business". I realize how pathetically ignorant that was (now) but thanks to DU, my ignorance was not a permanent condition.

11. Special election to reverse Prop 8?
How is this accomplished? Do the rules in CA allow this?
