Hateful bigot Marilyn Musgrave, who lost House seat by 12 points, hasn't conceded yet

Bitterness generated by the bruising battle between Betsy Markey and Marilyn Musgrave apparently lingers days after voters decided the winner of the 4th Congressional District.

Incumbent Republican Musgrave, who lost to Democrat Markey by a 56 to 44 percent margin Tuesday, has yet to call and congratulate Markey on her win.

Musgrave also hasn't conceded the race, said Markey spokesman Ben Marter. "She has yet to admit defeat," he said. "It's a little bizarre."

Calls to Musgrave's campaign and congressional office went unanswered Friday....

Not congratulating a political opponent has certainly happened in the past, but it's also "not the norm," said Bob Duffy, chairman of the Colorado State University political science department.

"There is no doubt that someone in that campaign is not happy about losing," said Duffy.

"We would have appreciated a call," Markey spokesman Marter said. "But we're moving forward."

Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave. This three-term Republican is best known as the main sponsor of the heinous and unsuccessful Federal Marriage Amendment, the proposed constitutional amendment that would define marriage as "the union of a man and a woman" and bar any recognition of same-sex marriage or "legal incidents thereof" in the United States. In 2006, she announced that gay marriage was "the most important issue that we face today."The American Conservative Union ranks Musgrave as the most conservative member of the House.

Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusettsnotes one thing he admires about Musgrave: "If you're going to have someone who's a hater, it's best that she's not very bright. I appeared with her in a couple of forums to debate her bill, but she's totally incapable of even explaining what it says."

Yes, Marilyn, the lock has been changed to your former office. Will you agree to leave the building quietly, or do we have to call the Capitol Police?

12. She's still a member...
Remember, the terms of office for newly elected members of Congress commence on January 3, 2009, so any current officeholders still have access to staff and offices and are paid until then.

Also, technically, no one has either been elected or defeated yet as electors are only formally declared after the state's Secretary of State releases the official canvass.

The vote totals we saw on the news and in print are informal tallies with no legal weight.

15. I was aware of that, thanks
My post was based on the understanding that such a scenario would take place after Congress reconvenes in January..

7. I am ELATED at her loss. I was hoping for it in '06 and am glad to see her taken out in '08.
She is an awful, hateful woman. Doesn't deserve to hold ANY elective office.

8. She got her start running for the school board which was the plan
Edited on Sun Nov-09-08 10:31 PM by Ichingcarpenter
suggested by the religious right and focus on the family

She entered politics in 1990, running for her local school board on a crusade to end sex education as part of the curriculum. By the time her tenure was over, the schools taught "abstinence only" -- and offending passages in health textbooks had been blacked out. During her eight years in the Colorado legislature, Musgrave continued her moralizing, overcoming two vetoes by the governor to pass a state ban on gay marriage.

This is why politics is local and so important...... get involved with your local government
and take back your schools, towns, counties and state.

13. Well...
Her term of office officially expires on January 3, 2009. She will be paid until then and as full use of her office and staff.

However, in the coming days and weeks, her Capitol Hill office will be emptied and her personal effects shipped back home. She will be assigned a cubicle in the Capitol basement until her term in office expires.

On January 3, 2009, the term of office of her successor, Betsy Markey commences although the actual oath of office will be administered within a few days of that date. Congress in its final dame duck session will assign the precise day before it adjourns sine die.

Upon taking her oath of office, Ms. Markey will be entitled to her salary, office and paid staff. The dispensation of office space in the House is allocated via seniority. As a freshman, she will get some rather more spartan accommodations via a lottery. The "loser" gets an office that is split into two halves with a public lavatory separating the two. If you call her office and hear frequent flushing in the background, you'll know why.

Should Ms. Musgrave refuse to leave her Capitol Hill office/cubicle after 12:00 PM on January 3, 2009, Capitol Police officers will escort her out of the premises and/or arrest her for trespassing.

16. No tears in seeing her leave.
This is the second time I've worked on a campaign to oust Musgrave. Two years ago she held on to her seat by only about 3%; part of that loss was due to her opponent in '06 being biracial, and some voters stated they'd never vote for a n*****. Those parts of the district went, unsurprisingly, for Musgrave. Proud to say I live in part of the district that went oh-so-blue for Markey.

For what it's worth, Musgrave has never been known for any degree of social grace. That would require an infusion of class, and she's unwilling to make the effort. That said, if she wants to borrow some tweezers to remove the door splinters from her butt - well, maybe, but she'd have to bring her own mirror cuz I ain't going there!
