Peru offers bald dog of Incas to Obamas
Source: Reuters

LIMA (Reuters) – Peruvians crazy about their national dog, a bald and often toothless breed popular among Incan kings, offered Monday to send a hypoallergenic puppy to the Obama family.

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has promised daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, a new pet for the White House. But Malia is allergic to most breeds, he said Friday as speculation swirled about the dog the family would choose.

Owners of the Peruvian Hairless Dog, a breed dating back 3,000 years and depicted in pre-Hispanic ceramics, say it is perfect for kids who are sensitive to dogs.

"They do not cause any type of allergy and are very friendly and sweet," said Claudia Galvez, 38, director of the Friends of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association.

"We want to give a male puppy to Obama's daughters, so they get to experience all the joys of having a dog but without any allergies."

2. Nice gesture, but not many kids want a hairless dog...
Personally, I think the girls should get the dog they want.

8. With allergies they are going to have to learn to make concessions
This dog may not be ideal, but I'm sure they could learn to love it.

16. Poodles are hypoallergenic .
I don't know them personally, but many children would prefer a poodle.

My only point is that the kids should get the dog they want.

3. It's a cool looking dog
but I think that most little girls would prefer something cute and fluffy. There are several other non-hairless breeds that are hypo-allergenic. Allergies are usually caused by the animal's dander, not it's hair. The only natural hypo-allergenic cat breed is the Siberian forest Cat-which has hair as long as a Maine Coon's! I think that there are several canine equivalents.

13. On CNN the other day, they were talking to a reporter(I can't remember his name but recognized him)
in London. He said he had been overseas during many Presidential elections but he had never seen anything like this. He said the entire world was ecstatic. He said Americans overseas were being treated differently now - he knew from personal experience. He said "it is like Obama is President of the World".

7. I would take him! I think he's cute and would work well
with my Schnauzer Misha. Of course....I'd have to buy a wardrobe of sweaters but that would be one dog I wouldn't have to groom.

I think the girls should pick their own dog. Schnauzer's are good but they must be raised with children from pups or they don't do well with them.

10. Ugly dogs need love, too.
I'm sure the Obama girls will go, 'Ewww', but in a way, these dogs are kind of cute. In their own special way, of course. As someone with the worst allergies on the planet, along with a viciously shedding Chow, these dogs look very attractive.

24. Personally, I would stay away from any male dogs.
Would be easier to clean up with a female that squats and pisses in one spot versus a male that would spray anything vertical.

Peru, my husband and I want him if the Obamas don't. I don't know how my bulldog would feel about him, but my Viszla would love him.
I could use him bring him to class (I teach indigenous peoples of Latin America). How cool! And, there is no more shedding with this little guy!

36. I don't get it.
I don't understand all the negativity about this dog. He looks smashing to me and I generally don't care for dogs at all.

Of course if Mr Obama and his family prefer a different dog then that's fine too but some of the commentary in this thread and others is a little rich in my view.
